A traumatic accident has prompted a warning for parents, after a 10-year-old Perth boy came within a millimetre of being paralysed.
Landen Sturman was making himself a toastie, when he fell backwards into an open dishwasher. A steak knife, which had been facing blade up in the dishwasher became lodged in his back.
“Stacking the dishwasher is something so mundane that most people don’t think twice about it, but it goes to show how even the smallest actions can have a huge impact,” Landen’s mum Emma explained. She’s urging other families to make sure they never stack knives blade up in the dishwasher.

Doctors said Landen escaped being paralysed by a millimetre.
Specialist neurosurgery and orthopaedic teams from the Perth Children’s Hospital worked for hours to delicately remove the knife, ensuring Landen didn’t suffer any lasting nerve damage.
“Despite being such a traumatic event for our family, everyone at PCH was lovely. It really was the best outcome we could have hoped for,” Emma said.

During his stay at PCH, Landen discovered a new talent – marionette puppetry – after taking part in a creative workshop with the Di Filippo School of Puppetry, part of the Arts Program funded by the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“Despite Landen having a very tough few days at PCH, it’s also a positive to see him discover a new talent during his stay,” said Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation CEO Carrick Robinson.
“Creative workshops, like those provided through the Artist in Residence program, not only provide kids like Landen with a much-needed distraction, they also help to boost mental health, ease anxiety, and build social connections.”
