A traumatic accident has prompted a warning for parents, after a 10-year-old Perth boy came within a millimetre of being paralysed.

Landen Sturman was making himself a toastie, when he fell backwards into an open dishwasher. A steak knife, which had been facing blade up in the dishwasher became lodged in his back.

“Stacking the dishwasher is something so mundane that most people don’t think twice about it, but it goes to show how even the smallest actions can have a huge impact,” Landen’s mum Emma explained. She’s urging other families to make sure they never stack knives blade up in the dishwasher.

Doctors said Landen escaped being paralysed by a millimetre.

Specialist neurosurgery and orthopaedic teams from the Perth Children’s Hospital worked for hours to delicately remove the knife, ensuring Landen didn’t suffer any lasting nerve damage.

“Despite being such a traumatic event for our family, everyone at PCH was lovely. It really was the best outcome we could have hoped for,” Emma said.

During his stay at PCH, Landen discovered a new talent – marionette puppetry – after taking part in a creative workshop with the Di Filippo School of Puppetry, part of the Arts Program funded by the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“Despite Landen having a very tough few days at PCH, it’s also a positive to see him discover a new talent during his stay,” said Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation CEO Carrick Robinson.

“Creative workshops, like those provided through the Artist in Residence program, not only provide kids like Landen with a much-needed distraction, they also help to boost mental health, ease anxiety, and build social connections.”

  • Oh my goodness! What an awful thing to happen to this kid! Definitely a freak accident and I am glad he will be ok, but just shoes us how important it is to stack the dishwasher with the knives blades facing down! Thank goodness e have one that is a draw and the cutlery lays down on that

  • Absolutely terrifying freak accident to happen to a young boy. Ive never put sharp utensils upwards even when using the dish rack on the bench, you just never know what little hands will come and grab something and not realise and get hurt easily this way! Definitely a lesson for everyone

  • Omg what a freak accident… I remember packing the dishwasher as a chore when I was younger and we always put blade side up. Having the blade facing down blunts the blade or so iwe were told…
I now face the knives gently downwards on the dish rack due to stabbing myself while washing up… It wasn’t bad.
I tell me kids to face knives downwards or lay large knives flat on dish rack…
    As they say “safety First”.

  • What a very lucky young man Landen is, I’m sure he and his parents will be thanking their lucky stars for many a long day. It is so simple for something to happen like tripping when the door is open that I have always shut the door every time I put something into my dishwasher. It is amazing how something like this could have been so very different, and yet others upend a car and crawl out with nothing wrong with them. Go figure.

  • I have a 2 drawer dishwasher so if you lean on it, it will automatically close. I also never put my knives in with the blade up because if not looking you can cut your hand. I’m so glad that Landen didn’t receive any lasting problems with his back and will make a full recovery.

  • Good idea to keep the dishwasher closed when not in use as well as stacking the knives in with the blades faced down. Dishwashing tablets are toxic as well and a danger to little ones putting them in their mouth. I’m so happy that Landen has no nerve damage and he will make a good recovery

  • This is why I constantly remind everyone not to put any knives or anything sharp facing upwards in the dishwasher. I always make sure to keep the door closed at all times too as I’ve actually tripped over the door before. Poor little guy, I feel so bad for what he has been through.

  • My father in law has always drilled this into us. I have learned about stacking blade down. It’s also good because then there’s no risk of getting stabbed by things when you are unloading, etc. I love that they also had a creative workshop available. It’s such a good thing for the kids!

  • Wow poor Landen such a scary time for him and his family. It is so lucky he wasn’t paralysed as it was extremely close to being so.. We have always put the knives in the dishwasher with the blade down, and now I know how important it is to do that.

  • Oh wow. I’m so glad he’s ok. What a crazy accident but so lucky it wasn’t worse. I have four kids and we are always super careful with knives because you just never know when something like that could happen. Fantastic that he was able to get something positive out of his hospital stay with the puppetry though.

  • Oh my goodness what a scary freaky incident ! Thank God the knife was that couple of millimeters away from paralysing him and the doctors were able to operate him without causing nerve damage. Thanks for making us aware that something as little as the position of the knifes in the dishwasher could be potentially so dangerous. I love it how London discovered a new talent in the hospital !

  • What a uniquely traumatizing experience for the whole family. Kind of makes me feel that much better for not owning a dishwasher. What a horrible freak accident. Boy’s certainly very brave.

  • A very scary accident indeed and any item that could possibly cause an injury goes blade and prong down in the dishwasher and in the dishrack. It is also important for all doors to be closed in the kitchen. A dishwasher or any door that is left open in a kitchen can be a safety and trip hazard.

  • Oh my gosh. How scary! The last thing you would think when stacking the dishwasher, is your son somehow falling onto a steak knife!
I’m so glad that he is recovering well. One good thing that comes from this story is now that others will think twice about how they can stack the dishwasher safely.

  • Oh.

    My.

These freaking accidents can happen to easily! How scary. So glad it’s a hassle ending. The gruelling wait for the surgery outcome must have felt like days! Imagine if the surgeon slipped!

I do try to be mindful of knives down, even when hand washing as I’ve cut my arm before on a knife in the sink. And never leave knives in soapy water!

  • Holy moly, what a lucky boy for it to have turned out like this. I never leave the dishwasher door open. If I do, I almost instantly forget and walk into it. This is the nightmare scenario of walking into it. Glad he’ll be okay, and a lesson to us all to lose the door!

  • This boy is extremely lucky to be alive by the sounds of it. I have never placed my knives in the dishwasher like this. I have a draw at the top of the dishwasher where all my knives go and this is a much saver option. I am so glad to hear this little boy is ok and that PCH took care of him.
