If you’re looking for small, simple steps towards making your home more sustainable, switching up the way you clean is an absolute no-brainer. Something as small as creating own sustainable cleaning kit not only reduces your family’s impact on the environment, it’s a great way to stretch the budget.

Sustainable doesn’t have to be hard – it’s about smart choices and little know-how. Choosing cleaning products that are environmentally conscious and affordable – like Oates Earthly – makes putting together this kit a breeze.

We’re going to take you through exactly what you’ll need for a sustainable cleaning kit that costs less than $10 – including how to make your own enviro-friendly cleaning sprays. In just three easy steps you’ll have a kit that can tackle the kitchen, bathroom and general household cleaning for weeks.

Step 1: Grab Your Reusable Products

We’re only going to need three Oates Earthly products to make our kit an absolute weapon against grime and dirt around the home.

Oates Earthly Non-Scratch Sponge Scourer 2pk – $2.90
Perfect for delicate surfaces like glass, non-stick cookware and tiles, the Oates Earthly Non-Scratch Sponge Scourer is tough on stains and kinder to the planet. The scourer is made from responsibly-sourced coconut yarn and recycled polyester and the sponge material is 100% biodegradable cellulose. At under $3 for a two pack, this gives our cleaning kit one scourer for the dishes and another for bench tops.

Oates Earthly Non-Scratch Scourer 2pk – $1.75
Great for tough grime, but still gentle enough to be used on delicate surface like glass and tiles, the Oates Earthly Non-Scratch Scourer is made from responsibly-sourced coconut yarn and recycle polyester. And it’s less that two bucks for a two pack.

Oates Earthly Reusable Bamboo Wipes (10 Sheets) – $3.50
If a single roll of paper towel disappears in a week at your place adding the Oates Earthly Reusable Bamboo Wipes to your sustainable cleaning kit will be an absolute budget beater! They can clean any hard surface and are made from responsibly and sustainably sourced bamboo. Each wipe is washable up to 80 times, so one wipe is equivalent to 80 paper towels! Use them wet or dry for cleaning or dusting.

Step 2: Make Up A Kitchen Spray

You probably have everything you need for this kitchen spray on hand, and it only costs .50c to create a spray bottle worth! Reuse a spray bottle you already have and mix up the following:

  • 1 cup white vinegar (about $0.30 worth)
  • 1 cup water
  • A squeeze of lemon juice or a drop of essential oil (optional)

This mixture is great to use on benches, splash backs and stovetops.

Step 3: Mix Up A Bathroom Scrub

This paste costs just $1 to make and will tackle sinks, tiles and soap scum. Used with the Oates Earthly Non-Scratch Scourer the bathroom will sparkle in no time. Here’s what you need:

  • ½ cup bicarb soda (about $0.50 worth)
  • Add just enough water to form a paste

Once you’ve scrubbed the surface you’re cleaning, use a Oates Earthly Reusable Bamboo Wipe to buff the surface and watch it shine!

  • Vinegar is a great cleaner but its not a disinfectant and I think people tend to over look that. It gets things so they look clean but it hasnt killed the bacteria which is a major issue if you are cleaning up after a sick child.
    Bamboo wipes are awesome.

  • An eco tip I just learnt, add squeezed out lemon halves into your cutlery basket in the dishwasher. Its a great way to add a nice smell to your machine and helps draw out nasty smells that like to stick around on dishes

  • The products you buy and use can make the biggest difference in your cleaning routine. Having the wrong kind of products, can often make the chore more tedious, especially if you have to put in more effort because of a poor product that wasnt right for the job. I definitely choose quality over price any day when it comes to my products!

  • I love the natural ingredients in the cleaning products! Vinegar is becoming a real star around here. The one thing i would add would be a magic whites. It would be even better if these had more longevity but we use them until they wither to nothing! They start woth cleaner jobs and make their way down to window tracks.

  • Thanks for sharing your tips. I never make up a cleaning kit as such but have all theses products (or similar) seperately throughout the house. I do like to make up my own cleaning spray too but rather than using squeeze of lemon I like to add some eucalyptus oil, which is great for cleaning and kills bacteria

  • This is a really great article. Yes, I realise it’s kinda an ad too, but there’s really useful information. I love the bamboo wipes. When my kids were little, I went to Costco and bought a bundle of cloths – coarse material, a bit like old nappies – and I used them over and over for cleanups. And on the odd occasion it got too disgusting, they were cheap enough to toss out.

  • It is more important than ever with the cost of living and lots of products costing more each shop to be able to source affordable products. We have a basic cleaning kit for the household and use a combination of products on special and natural products. It is a combination that works for us.
