From the best-selling Karly Lane comes a pitch-perfect story of rural tragedy, old flames reawakened and the meaning of home. A tribute to the Rural Fire Service and the work they selflessly do.

Recently divorced mother-of-two Samantha Murphy agrees to house-sit for her parents for a few weeks-but when the house involves several hundred acres of farming and livestock, it’s a little more involved than the usual job. Sam left the family farm years ago for a more exciting, glamorous life on the Sunshine Coast, but now that her kids have grown up and moved out, she’s at a crossroads.

Jack Cameron was in love with Sam when they were teenagers, and she broke his heart when she left town at eighteen. Their lives moved along similar paths-both marrying, having families and getting divorced-but in very different locations. Now that Sam is back, they begin to realise that there are unresolved feelings between them.

As catastrophic fires roar destructively through the local farming community, Sam has no choice but to evacuate her parents’ farm. But worse is still to come: Jack is reported missing and Sam is forced to prepare for the worst news.

Once Burnt, Twice Shy is a heartwarming story of second chances, of loss and rebuilding, and of finally coming home.

  • This sounds like such a good read! The perfect escape to relax and unwind to

  • I love a story that reflects an area I’m familiar with,a lead character I can relate to and an Australian flavour. My elderly neighbour and I share books and I know she would enjoy it as it reflects her life experience a few decades earlier.

  • I love the feel, smell and just loves books.

  • It wouldn’t be a great read for me, but it would certainly be one for my wife of 42 years. These gooey, lovey dovey books are her favourite reads, probably because she misses out on the amorous side of our relationship after all these years, and I’m always rejected when I try. Ha! Ha! They seem to be a realistic involvement for her, being a romantic country girl.

  • This looks like it is a really terrific book and I would love to read it.

  • Reading is a luxury these days and when I have the precious time, I want my read to be worth it and this book sounds perfect. I also have a close connection to RFS with family involved.

  • I would like to win this Karly Lane book as she is a favourite author of mine. I love to read her books as they give such an insight into the Australian way of life. Her books are such an easy read.

  • I would love to gift this to my mum. She’s having a tough time lately and loves to read. A new book is just what she needs.

  • The fire service in rural communities are amazing! I would love to read this book!

  • This would be a gift for someone, who likes reading.

  • Oh my goodness, what an amazing woman, I love her already & I can relate to some degree yet fortunately I have never experienced such fires as the Rural Fire Service as dealt with so strong, determined & full of love. I would love to curl up with Karly Lanes, “Once burnt, Twice Shy”.

  • I always like to find a new Author especially our own Australian ones! This sounds like a great read.

  • It sounds a fascinating book with all the elements I love whilst reading – rural setting, romance, flashbacks, disaster and hopefully happy ending. Great to be engrossed in to get away from the Covid-19 blues. Hats off to Karly Lane for highlighting the magnificent job done by the Rural Fire Service.

  • This looks like a great read. I’d love to add this to my summer reading list.

  • Would love to have a read of it and see if it makes my top 10 reads
