'My Husband Left Our 7-Year-Old Son Home Alone, And Somehow I'm To Blame' - Mouths of Mums

A furious mum has sparked a huge debate after revealing her husband went to work without taking their seven-year-old son to school, because she didn’t remind him he was on school drop-off duty.

It resulted in the young boy being left alone at home for hours, until the school contacted his mum noting his absence.

The mum explained that for the past three years she has worked in the office every Friday, which means she leaves the house at 6am, before anyone else is awake. Over the past three years her husband has always taken their sone to school, which starts at 8.30am.

“My husband lost his job a few months ago and recently found a part-time job waiting tables at a cafe, because of this, his schedule varies. Today (Friday), he’s working 9-5,” she explained.

“He got ready for work and noticed our son was awake and watching TV. Husband asked our son if I had gone out to get coffee, son said ‘yes’ (not sure why, again, I leave before I see or speak to anyone), so my husband took that as fact and just left and went to work.”

‘When were you going to tell me I had to take him to school?!’

The mum says by the time she got an automated call from the school stating her son had been marked absent, the seven-year-old had been home alone for almost three hours.

“I called the school to verify that our son was there (but possibly late, because that isn’t unusual for my husband, unfortunately), and to my horror; he was NOT at school.

“I called my husband as I was (literally) running out of my office, in a ditch effort, hoping they stayed home together (maybe son was sick?) but nope!

“My husband’s response: ‘When were you going to tell me I had to take him to school? How was I supposed to do that when I have work at 9?’

“My response: “And how am I supposed to take him to school at 8:30 when I have work at 7? Why would you assume I hadn’t gone to work when this has been my schedule for years now? And as the last adult to leave the house, once you noticed I wasn’t here, you should have called me to verify instead of taking the word of our 7yo son that I had gone to get coffee!'”

The Blame Game

She says her husband doesn’t agree and is adamant his wife is at fault.

“I admit – sure – I could have verified with him last night since my husband now has a shifting schedule. But since I have to leave for work hours before our son even has to be at school, I don’t see why that would fall on me.

“And I still maintain that as the last adult to leave the house, upon noticing I was gone, responsibility fell on my husband to verify before leaving a 7yo child home by themselves. All it would have taken was a text or phone call to make sure I was, in fact, taking our son to school. But instead, son was left home alone for 3 hours.

“Unfortunately, my son was very distressed when I got home, crying and panicked, and even he wailed “Dad just left me!” (as he is also fully aware I am never home on Fridays). It took me some time to calm him down.”

The mum took to an internet forum asking whether she was actually in the wrong, and overwhelmingly she found support.

“Imagining a grown man trying to deflect blame onto a 7 year old is painful. He was the last adult in the house, end of story,” one person commented.

“I’m sorry, this is weaponised incompetence at it’s worst – and your literal CHILD was left truant for hours to make whatever the point he was trying make here. I am… pretty disgusted on your behalf.,” another added.

  • Yes Broo Rocky Vic, I am very much like you; i put everything in planners and calendars with reminders and have 5 alarm notifications set plus repeats during the day. No excuse indeed ! The thing that bothers me the most is that the dad instead of feeling alarmed , shocked or embarrassed by his mistake, goes into blame shifting and not taking any responsibility.

  • I am always so concerned that I will miss something in the brain-fog that is parenting, I have reminders for my reminders! I have everything in a shared calendar, then an alarm that goes off at the start and end of each day to remind me to check the calendar. There is no excuses in this age of modern techology, to ‘forget’ or be unaware of everyone’s schedules.

  • Sounds like the husband is just another man child. I am tired of men who just rely on the spouse to tell them everything bar wiping their own bum. Fact- the mum has always had that schedule for years. It hadn’t changed. Fact- if he was unsure for whatever reason, he could have checked with her.
Assuming she had just gone out for coffee was just dumb and kind of sounds like an excuse he made up to make himself feel better that he screwed up.

  • The most shocking and concerning thing in this article is that the father goes into accusing and blame shifting, rather than being shocked by the fact that he left his seven year old son alone at home in a distressed state. Potentially, this could have been reported to child safety as neglect.

  • Not a very responsibFle action from the Father and the Mother has every right to be upset with. Some men who are Fathers and have children do not earn the right to actually be a Father with actions and behaviour such as this. I hope this Father has learnt a valuable lesson!

  • My heart hearts for this Mother’s situation. For starters it’s straight up against the law to leave a young child at home alone. But the fact that she’s being gaslit for it, is indicative of bigger problems. I could never handle a partner not mature enough to accept responsibility for his mistakes.

  • Eeek! I feel so sorry for this mumma! What an awful situation. Theres nothing worse than someone who’s not open to ownership of wrong doing and blames others. It definetely sounds like he values his time and appointments more than his wife’s. He hasn’t even remembered she has work or he has remembered but just left anyway. I hope they can discuss it calmly and see that team work and communication is in the best interest of their child

  • This is complete weaponised incompetence! It is wild that a grown man cannot follow a routine and requires his wife reminding him of his parental responsibilities. I feel for the seven year old who was left at home all alone and the fear he would have felt watching his father drive off and leave him alone.

  • It does not surprise me at all,my saying is always why have a child when I marry one,men are the most selfish people and they can not think more than one thing at a time.A child’s well-being is no.1 especially your child’s safety,I’ve been divorced 23yrs and the best thing I’ve ever done in my life, don’t trust a man at all, they can’t even look after themselves, don’t blame yourself ,it’s his child too ,equal responsibilities. My child almost died at 2 yrs old under the fathers visitation,I told the family court that my ex is irresponsible and taking drugs, they did not care,my child swallowed amylnitrate, rushed to westmead hospital, lucky to be alive and the worst thing docs did nothing, the judge gave my ex more visitations, and treated me like I was the guilty party, the problem is we always blame ourselves, thankgod my child is 25 now.
I would divorce your husband, because I’m sure there’s going to be more situations, don’t rely on men …

  • Wow, this made me so mad reading it.
If your 7 year old child is fully aware of the schedule how can a full grown adult get it so wrong. Poor mum carrying all the mental load while dad just gets up and heads out to work ignoring all responsibility.

  • Oh no, that’s bad !
My first thought reading this is that for some men it is quite hard to admit wrong doing and they go in a huff and start denying in response. But yeah, I think as well that the husband is in the wrong here. I get that we some times forget things, but we can set ourselves reminders and alarms (I do).

  • If the child can work it out that mum always works fridays, then why not the dad?! The attempt by the husband to shift the blame onto the wife beggars belief, (my less polite reaction was ‘wtf?!’. The mum has one kid (the 7 year old) not two, hubbie needs to grow up and start adulting full time. Blame shifting is just not valid here! Adulting is also owning your mistakes – everyone stuffs up sometimes but the ‘it was her fault not mine’ defense is crap.

  • I read this then it was first posted on reddit and was sooo happy to see majority of the comments flaming the husband. I would get so angry if I were in her position. Her schedule never changed, and she is is currently the main earner for her family with consistent work. Dad messed up and has too much ego to just say sorry and own it
