Skin Virtue founder Nina Gajic said the main concern for your skin over winter was dryness, which can lead to flakiness, irritation, and other issues due to the drop in humidity, and indoor heating.

“You need to add a nourishing moisturiser to your skincare routine to help keep your skin protected and healthy during the cooler months,” she said. “Cold winds and low temperatures can cause blood vessels in the skin to constrict, which can lead to your skin not receiving enough nutrients and oxygen, causing a dull complexion.

“You should also support your skin with a face cream that contains valuable emollients.

“They work by forming a protective barrier on the surface of the skin to prevent moisture loss, thus improving skin hydration, and reducing dryness and irritation, helping to balance, nourish, and protect it from dehydration and irritation.”

The best place to start? Your cleanser. According to Nina, choosing the right cleanser is one of the most important steps when it comes to your skin’s pH and barrier function. “Aggressive cleansers that strip your skin can both disrupt and exacerbate sensitivity,” she said.

If you have oily or dehydrated skin, Nina recommends using Skin Virtue’s Super Clear Cleanse. “It’s our slightly higher acidic pH cleanser (pH 4) that effectively balances oil and removes grime and debris from the skin, helping to create the perfect environment for happy and healthy-looking skin,” she said.

“For normal to dry skin types, Skin Virtue’s Pure Nourish Cleanse is fantastic. It is a mildly acidic cream cleanser (pH 6) that is designed to preserve the lipids within the skin and help the skin to maintain moisture levels.”

Here are Nina’s top four tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing during the colder months:

  1. HYDRATE: Hydrate your skin during the day with a good mist, like Skin Virtue’s Future Advanced Serumist. This will support your skin’s hydration, which is important if you are sitting indoors for hours at a time.
  2. PROTECT: Remember to wear a scarf, hat and gloves when you venture outside to shield your skin from cold winds and extreme temperatures.
  3. CLEANSING: Use a mild and gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip essential oils from your skin. Avoid using hot water, as this can dehydrate your skin.
  4. HUMIDITY: Spending a lot of time indoors to avoid the cold weather? Remember to humidify your home by using a humidifier to add moisture to the air. This can counteract the drying effects of indoor heating.
