A doorbell camera has captured the dramatic moment a mother gave birth on her own front lawn.
Emily and Michael Johnson were packing up the car to head to hospital, when their baby decided it was as good a time as any to make appearance. Emily admits the front yard drama was ‘totally not in my birth plan’.
“I was going to accept those wonderful pain medicines at the hospital,’ Emily told CNN. ‘Having a natural childbirth was not in my birth plan. But given how fast the labor progressed, we knew I was not getting there.”
In the Ring doorbell video, Emily, 31, can be seen and heard giving birth as her mother and husband look on, in the front yard of her California home. Just as things came to a head – literally – help arrived.
“It was surreal,” Emily’s mum Kristy Sparks told Big 105.9. “I could see lights from the fire truck and the next thing I knew I had the baby’s head right against my hand.”
The baby’s first cries can be heard in the video, with Emily welcoming her newborn: “Hey Thomas! How you doin’, bud? Hey Tommy!”

The couple was headed to the hospital, which is only five minutes from their home, when the drama unfolded. Emily was walking across the front yard, when she realised there was no way she could get in the car.
“I was like, the grass is a little bit damp, and I was like, I’m feeling nauseous, I’m going to go and lay down in the grass,” Emily told Inside Edition. She joked that she ended up like a ‘cow giving birth in a field.’
Once they arrived at the hospital, they were able to relive the birth via the doorbell recording. But Emily admits her birth video would never have seen the light of day if she’d been facing the other direction.
