Let’s be honest, we’ll try just about anything to help our teething babies sleep through the night – so putting an egg in a sock and hanging it above the cot? Why not?!

While it sounds a little crazy, there is some ‘scientific’ thinking behind the egg sock teething hack, which has gone viral on social media. Mums are swearing by the simple trick to help ease teething pain and get their tots snoozing peacefully all night long.

Egg Sock Teething Hack

The hack is as simple as putting a raw egg, still in its shell, into an unwashed, used sock. While many say it’s just an old wives’ tale, there could be something more to it.

One theory is based on an egg’s apparent ability to absorb carbon dioxide up to seven times its own weight. The theory goes that C02 causes pressure on baby’s gums and removing additional carbon dioxide out of the room relieves the pressure. Interesting!

Mums have been sharing their egg sock hack teething success stories on social media. Kate Garret says her baby hadn’t been sleeping well for weeks, waking up screaming every hour.

“We ordered different sleep sacks. Tried different bath supplements. Figured it was a growth spurt, lost our minds for a bit,” she explained in a Facebook post. “I asked Axel (Kate’s husband) to hang up an egg sock just in case it was his teeth.

“Bub slept all night. And has slept since. About four nights ago he started doing this again. But he’s on solids now so I thought maybe with his growing appetite he wasn’t staying full. Last night I had Axel change the egg out while I gave the baby a bath and got him ready for bed. Last night he slept all night. 8p to 6 am.

“I took a cold egg straight from the refrigerator and put it in the sock. No cooking. Make sure there’s no cracks or anything so that it won’t stink. I’ve never done it with a farm egg but you could try!”

Other mums, like Jess Brownsberger have shared their stories on TikTok.

@jessbrownsberger apparently eggs trap CO2 which takes pressure off your teething baby’s gums ???????? #momsoftiktok #teething #babiesoftiktok #babyhack #momhack #sockegg ♬ original sound – jessbrownsberger

  • Does not sound believeable but if you are desperate then it really wont hurt to give this a try. I have never heard of it but it sounds something like putting a cut onion in the room to absorb all the germs. Doubt that works also. Dont forget to replace the egg every few days

  • I can understand that when you’re desperate that you’re willing to try anything and everything.
However I’m afraid the “Egg in Sock” method is more of a viral home remedy with mixed anecdotal evidence regarding its effectiveness. There’s no scientific backing for the method, and the theory behind it has been debunked.

  • It’s worth trying to see how you go. What’s the worst that could happen?!

  • An old wives tale – there many of these tales that actually work, so it’s worth trying for a peaceful and long sleep.

  • Interesting and worth giving anything a go!

  • Sounds different. I can’t understand why they are unsure if a farm egg would work. I thought that was where most eggs from from! (not just from an egg carton)

  • Why an unwashed, used sock? poor kids probably pass out ;/

  • It doesn’t matter if it’s just an old wives tale, if it works for your baby who cares? Anything is worth trying at least once. By the looks of it, it’s an old wives tale that works. Who would have thought eggs would have another handy use to them.

  • I have never heard of this. However, I do appreciate that during teething you will try anything.

  • This just sounds weird but I suppose when we’re desperate we’ll try anything.

  • I definitely would have tried this if I’d known of it 3 years ago! Teething times were so hard
