Hello!

When Target first made the big announcement that they would be closing some Target stores and rebranding others to Kmart, I didn’t worry too much. My beloved local wasn’t in the initial list they released last year. BUT Target has now updated the list and I’m devastated (and shocked) to see that my beloved Target store is getting the chop.

Last year, we reported that Wesfarmers were looking at converting 92 large format Target stores and Target Country stores into Kmart branches, while around 75 Target stores are expected to shut its doors permanently.

The company said that this move is to “improve the commercial viability of the business and to support the thousands of people we employ.” The organisation aims “to make it smaller, more focused, less complex and more digitally enabled so we can better serve our customers both instore and online.”

Some of the changes already took place last year, while the majority of the shake-up is going to be actioned over the next few months.

Target has recently updated its website with all the stores that will be affected by these changes and there have been some updates from last year.

There are a large number of Target stores that will be closing their doors forever. The full list is below:

What Will Happen To Target Staff?

“Target team members impacted by store closures will be given priority consideration for new roles created in Kmart and Catch as these businesses continue to grow. In addition, Wesfarmers has established a cross-divisional working group to identify redeployment opportunities for affected team members, including in Bunnings and Officeworks. Where there are no Wesfarmers businesses in town, we’re also working with other employers to try and find opportunities for our team. Target team members who are unable to be redeployed will be provided with access to support services, along with all entitlements.”

So there’s going to be a lot of changes in the Target/Kmart space this year. But I better sign off and head for a Target shop before it closes down forever.

Are any of your local Target stores affected by these changes? Are you happy/sad/don’t care? Tell us in the comments below.

  • We are really glad that our Target is becoming a K. Mart. I have love K-mart for so long. I love their products and prices. We have a Big W in Victor Harbor as well and It may help them to keep their prices down

  • Phew! Thank goodness our Target store is remaining open.

  • I’m sad to see our local Target go. As much as I don’t mind Kmart, it’s just not the quality of Target. Target always seem to have more pride in their stores being tidier and cleaner compare to Kmart stores.

  • Target is also closing its Albany store in WA. Except instead of adding it to the closing list and being upfront about it, they have chosen not to renew their lease of the building. So I’m also losing my Target store even though it’s STILL not on a list of closing stores.
The sneaky, low handed move has a lot of our town very upset as we will now have only Kmart and Best & Less for kids clothes in a town of 40,000 people which also services the area with a further 20-30,000 people. And neither of these stores have as nice clothing or as good quality as Target.
Nearest Target will now be 300-400km away.
So very very disappointing that Target is closing so many of its other stores too.

  • Ulladulla target is closing and turning into a kmart hub which I was told by one of the target staff members its not as good as a normal target that makes me sad

  • Target is like a better version of Kmart. Their kids clothes are better – and branded even if they are old dated brands from the 80s and 90s (eg Mooks, Piping hot etc) but for similar prices, I rather buy these “trendy” outfits over Kmart branded tops.

  • NOt big changes in the ACT, which is probably not surprising. I hope staff all find satisfactory alternatives, though.

  • Sad to see Target closing. I really dont like Kmart.

  • Our local Target is closing, and it is going to have a massive impact on our small country town. The closure will leave a large building empty, right in the middle of the Main Street. I still can’t quite get my head around this closure, as from all reports our local store consistently makes a lot of money. It’s really sad seeing the shelves start to empty and not be re-filled, and it makes me hesitant to support such a large organisation who obviously have no regard for the local communities they are about to devastate.

  • Sad to see Target go from Esperance WA but at the same time glad to see it will become a Kmart store. I’m hoping this will mean that the staff will still have their jobs.

  • Target store s over the past few years standards have dropped. It doesn’t bother me

  • All the regional stores it looks like in Vic

  • Sorry to hear they’re struggling.
