Hello!

Target has now revealed the list of Target stores which will be closing or converted and rebranded into Kmart, as well as estimated timings for when these drastic changes will be made.

We reported earlier that parent company Wesfarmers has made the bold move to close or rebrand up to 167 Target stores, which represents over half of all Target outlets.

Wesfarmers announced that up to 92 large format Target stores and Target Country stores could be converted into Kmart branches, while around 75 Target stores are expected to shut its door permanently.

These changes are slated to take place over the next 12 months, but predominantly in 2021.

The major retail company also announced plans to “accelerate the growth of Kmart”, such as investing more heavily in its online platform.

These changes are expected to “enhance the overall position of the Kmart Group, while also improving the commercial viability of Target,” said Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott.

What about Jobs?

Target has said that they are hoping to minimise job losses.

“We are committed to providing every opportunity for redeployment for our team members who will be affected by these changes.”

“Across the Kmart Group we have made a significant effort to avoid store closures and retain our people and for impacted store team members we have the benefit of time to help find alternative employment opportunities,” a Target spokeswoman said, as reported in news.com.au.

“All team members in Target stores scheduled for conversion to Kmart will be offered the opportunity to join the growing Kmart team, for other affected Target team members, we will work with them to identify and offer other redeployment opportunities in Kmart, Catch, Bunnings and Officeworks as these businesses continue to grow.

“We believe that Target has a future as a leading retailer in Australia and we know it is loved by so many, but a number of actions are required to ensure it is fit for purpose in a competitive, challenging and dynamic market, including a smaller number of stores and a stronger online business.”

First To Close And Convert

The Target branch in Pasadena in South Australia will be the first Target store to close by the end of June 2020, followed by Campbelltown in NSW in July and Meadow Springs in Western Australia in August.

The remaining closures will predominantly take place in early to mid 2021.

The Target stores that will be converting to Kmart first will be Seymour, Echuca and Cobram in Victoria. These changes will take place in July.

The conversions of the Castlemaine, Kyabram and Wooden stores, also in VIC, are expected to take place in September this year.

The majority of the other Target stores which will be converted into Kmart, will take place by early 2021.

This is the current list of all Target stores that will be closing or rebranded as Kmart:

  • Our local store became a kmart and it is so much better. Dont miss the Target store at all.

    Reply

  • unfortunately they are leaving an empty market for target shoppers as they have unique items and better brands than the cheap Kmart alternatives.

    Reply

  • That’s a lot of stores. Pity.

    Reply

  • Absolutely devestated by this. I live in forbes & it is our last & only store left in town with affordable clothing or homewares. ???? & no Kmart conversion!!!!

    Reply

  • It is sad to see that there will be so many stores closing. Target is a retail institution.

  • My local is not closing great for those employed

  • It’s a shame however I do like Kmart more than Target. It’s better value

    Reply

  • Wow, we’re not impacted yet. We have a Target and a KMart in our area, so I’m not sure what this will mean moving forward. So sad.

    Reply

  • Fortunately, my local one isn’t closing – so sad to see this happen in regional areas though where jobs will be lost and new ones hard to come by …..

    • The loss of jobs will be tough for many. :(

    Reply

  • I am so disappointed about this. Target is one of my favourite shops, and I don’t think it compares to Kmart but things have to change I guess.

    Reply

  • I’m 2 hours from one store and 3 hours from the other so won’t affect me as much. The one that is 2 hours away will become a Kmart store next year and the other one won’t be changing at this stage. Hope all who work in the stores affected will be given new jobs. It is a shame to see all of these stores closing though.

    Reply

  • Looks like none in Sydney are affected which is a relief but sad for regional towns. I was wondering what may happen to stores that are in shopping centres that have Kmart already.

    Reply

  • Disappointed my closest will close. Second closest will become a Kmart. Hope they keep the staff on when it rebrands.
