Pamela Mann couldn’t understand why everyone in the delivery room was in shock after she delivered her baby girl. In fact, she thought something was wrong. Turns out, the medical staff were in awe of her daughter’s size.

The first-time-mum, from Alabama, delivered her first baby, Paris Halo, via c-section and was confused when the doctor and nurses seemed a little fazed.

“The doctor pulls her out of me and all the nurses are like, ‘Oh God!’ ‘Wow!’” the 31-year-old told TODAY.com. “Then I started freaking out because I had no idea what was happening.”

Baby Paris weighed in at 13 pounds 4 ounces, or 6.01kg. And being her first baby, Pamela had no idea that her little girl was almost double the weight of an average newborn.

“I thought 13 pounds was normal. This is my first child, so I had no idea. And the nurses are going, ‘No. No. No. She is big.'”

Incredibly, doctors had been keeping an eye on the baby’s weight, but didn’t think she would be so much heavier than an average newborn.

“About a month ago I had a sonogram and the baby was estimated to be 10 pounds,” Pamela told Rick Karle. “My doctor figured it couldn’t be that big- he said it was probably 2 pounds less than that.”

Paris is spending some time in the NICU, but is expected to be home very soon.

  • Wow, what a very big baby girl! I can imagine the distress this first-time mum went through when the doctors and nurses were so amazed thinking that something was wrong with her newborn child. It is so scary the first-time around as unless you have done some research you have no idea what is right or wrong. I do feel for this mum though picking up this baby after having had a c-section.

  • Wow that is a heavy baby to deliver especially as a first time Mum. Other than her size she looks perfect and so beautiful. It’s a wonder the Mum was able to deliver such a big baby with no problem. I hope Mother and Baby and doing well and home asap.

  • Wow what a surprise and I though 8 pound 8 ounces was big. Just amazing that anyone can give birth to such a huge baby, and I have nothing but admiration for the mother.

  • Wow! That is one incredibly large baby. Good on her for for being able to carry her to term. If what they say is true, that each baby is progressively bigger each time, I can only imagine the size if she wants to go again for a second child. Congratulations to her!

  • What an incredible story. I have not met anyone before who has delivered a large baby. What an absolute cutie she is and well done mumma on the birth of your gorgeous girl. It doesn’t matter why she had a c-section, perhaps she had some medical issues or perhaps it was a choice she made. I am glad to hear the baby is doing well and i wish her all the very best.

  • Oh my goodness I would be saying thank goodness I had a C section for that one. I wonder what the reason for the C section was.
Gosh I would really want to be careful of bubs weight in any more pregnancies and i think i would be asking for another c section

  • What a beautiful chunky bubba. But thank goodness 13 pounds isn’t a regular occurrence! Holy moly, mumma better get wonderful mother’s day pressies every year!! Hopefully they didn’t invest in too many 0000 or 000 clothing sizes while anticipating her arrival, I dare say they won’t see much action at all

  • Well, you do hear jokes about 12 pound babies, so I guess it would be possible to make this mistake! And we all know that first time mums can make a lot of innocent mistakes (although like this one, few impact badly on their baby). It’s great both are well. Good luck!

  • How gorgeous. Glad mum and bub are ok. Not knowing a babies weight is normal. My girl was born 5lb14 and I thought that was normal, until I dressed her and 0000 were way too big. Doctor said she was healthy although on the smaller size. Having a big baby just means bigger cuddles.

  • Both my babies where in the 3kg range, but I would have been in the same boat when I first gave birth on what size to expect. You hear the stories of 10pound babies that it seems more common that is actually is I guess. Hope both mummy and baby and healthy

  • Oh Wow, that is one big baby! I’m so glad for her that it was a C Section. She is absolutely adorable. I can imagine the response in the delivery room. She’s definitely double the size of mine. What a wonderful story for a first child. Well done to this Mum.

  • Aw lol, my biggest baby was three kilogram ! I can understand the amazement of the medical staff at the hospital !!
My eldest was eight hundred eighty gram and very premature, my second was three kilogram and two weeks early and then we have two foster children under a legal guardianship who both were about five weeks premature and two and a half kilograms

  • I’ve had 4 babies, each one getting bigger than the last. I remember my 2nd being scanned just 2 days prior to birth and when half out the midwife said “so much for 50%ile so my husband and I thought we were having a tiny baby. Baby was 4.04kg and almost 60cm long! My 3rd was 4.5kg. With the getting bigger trend and me having gestational diabetes with my 4th everyone was expecting a baby well over 5kg. But funnily enough that baby was my smallest. Goes to show you never know when it comes to babies! I take my hat off to her, carrying such a heavy baby

  • One of mine was 4.5kg, and even as I was giving birth, the nurses were dismissing the doctor’s prediction that she’d be 4kg. They thought she’d be much smaller! In fairness, my previous three were all under 2.5kg, but she was also the only one of them who was full term.

  • Oh my goodness wow! That would have been so heavy to carry towards the end. Congrats to this mumma on the safe arrival of her little one! That is definitely something you dont see everyday to hear about a 6kg baby. Go mumma! As long as bubs is happy and healthy.
