Popular Baby Formulas Recalled Over Toxin Risk - Mouths of Mums

Baby formulas available at major retailers including Coles and Woolworths nationwide are being recalled because they may contain a toxin.

Specific batches of Alula Gold Reflux and Alula Colic & Constipation are being recalled due to the potential presence of toxin (cereulide) contamination, a substance produced by the Bacillus cereus microorganism. Food products containing the toxin may cause illness if consumed.

Acting Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) CEO Christel Leemhuis said the action follows an international recall by Lactalis, which prompted Sanulac to recall their affected batches.

“The potential presence of the cereulide toxin has been linked to an ingredient used in the Alula products, the same situation which led to a recent recall of specialist infant formula products,” Ms Leemhuis said.

“Cereulide can cause gastrointestinal illness but there have been no reports of associated illness in Australia. Other formula products not affected by the recall are available from retailers and parents and carers can contact their health care provider or pharmacist to discuss what’s best for their baby.”

Baby Formula Recall

The recalled formula batches are:

Alula Gold Reflux: Use By 17/03/2027, Batch 8000003387
Alula Colic & Constipation: Use By 17/03/2027, Batch 8000003407

The product(s) have been available for sale in Coles, Woolworths, pharmacies and Amazon nationally and online. The Alula Gold Reflux product has also been available at independent retailers including IGA, Big W and Costco nationally. This recall only applies to those products with the listed date and batch number details.

Symptoms linked to cereulide may include vomiting, diarrhoea or unusual lethargy. These symptoms can appear between 30 minutes to 6 hours after exposure and typically resolve within 24 hours.

Parents or carers concerned about the health of their infant should seek medical advice, and the products should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.

  • Recalls are always a worry and can be very scary. I often wonder if the news gets out to a large percentage of the buyers. With small children about we don’t always get to watch the news hear about it and shopping online stops us from noting posters in the store.

  • this is very worrying – we place a lot of trust in manufacturers of baby food and formula, and it’s not a good thing when they fail that trust. This would be scary for parents who use those brands of formula. Thank you for highlighting this; it’s the sort of warning that needs to be spread.

  • It is terrifying! Our children are the most important part of our life and if you can’t breastfeed and need to buy formula, you should be 200% sure that you are buying safe product that is essential for any life before 6-12 months old mark. It’s crazy for those mums who found out about this recall and have been using this formula.

  • Wow, this is very scary. Some mothers are relying on these products because they are not able to breast feed and to think that some of them could be harmful to their babies is ludicrous! More care needs to be taken in such essential products, especially when they are by some of our most trusted suppliers.
