Google, google, google! My Dad is type 1 and I had gestational. Anything I craved I googled “diabetic friendly…..” or suitable for diabetic or diabetic apple turnovers for example. Also there are diabetic specific cookbooks in supermarkets etc.

When I had gestational diabetes I found it hard around birthdays surrounded by sweet food. I’ve since been given a recipe for a diabetic friendly cake that we all love. I looked it up and it’s here on MoMs too : https://mouthsofmums.com.au/recipe/diabetic-fruit-cake-2/ I think it’s from the 3 ingredient book mentioned below.

My grandfather also has diabetes, he’s able to eat everything we can, just less salts and sugars.
It also depends on whether it’s type1 or 2

As a diabetic she should be able to eat the same as the family, your pediatrician will tell you that everyone should be eating the same – low fat, lots of fresh vegies plenty of calcium and protein. So simply modify your favourite recipes to suit. Don’t worry, you will soon be a whizz at calculating her carbs to work out how much is a serve. It will be even easier when she goes on a pump.

Definitely check out the Diabetes Australia website. It has a wealth of useful and helpful information.

The diabetic society has a website with recipes or otherwise go to your library and borrow some recipe books for diabetics. it is free to borrow.

Has your daughter been tested for coeliac disease (as is more common in those with type one diabetes)? If coeliac, then a gluten free diet will be needed. If not, then she can eat and a normal healthy diet. Vegetables should take up half of her dinner plate, proteins (fish, and lean meat) one quarter and starch/carbs (pasta, rice, dairy sweet potato, corn) the other third. Moderation is the key. Don’t add salt and sugar to foods. Make sure she gets enough calcium. Good websites are Diabetes Australia, Diabetes UK, jdrf website for type 1 people. Believe it or not, Tacos! Use corn taco shells so not a great deal of gluten. Use lean mince, and lots of salad lite tomatoes lettuce and capsicum. Plus cheese Which is good protein.

Otherwise simple meals like meat and veg. Or meat and salad. low sugar meals with low carbs. Coles sell a low G.I potato so Your darling won’t miss out on potato foods.
