A four-month-old baby boy has been rushed to hospital after being found with “critical facial injuries” at a home in Brisbane this morning.
Officers made the distressing discovery after being called to an address on Ridgeway Street at The Gap around 6.45am.
“When police arrived they located an infant with critical facial injuries who was subsequently transported to hospital,” police said in a statement.
The baby is undergoing surgery after allegedly being slashed in the face with a knife multiple times, reports 9 news.
“The mother found the child in a distressed state with injuries to his face,” Inspector Daniel Bragg told reporters.
“She’s clearly distraught over what’s occurred. She’s provided police with all the assistance she could.”
Insp Bragg said paramedics who were called to the home at Ridgeway Street at The Gap, as well as the first police officer on the scene, were visibly upset.
“It was distressing to see such injuries to such a small child,” Insp Bragg said.
A 64-year-old woman, who is known to the child, is currently assisting officers with their inquiries.
It’s understood the baby’s mother was visiting the home and was woken by the piercing sounds of her child crying.
Queensland Police told reporters the attack is being treated as an alleged “domestic incident”.
