It’s the retro throwback we didn’t know we needed! ALDI is hitting the road with a retro ice cream truck to deliver icy cold treats across Australia – and you won’t believe the old school prices!

Most of us have fond childhood memories of hearing Greensleeves playing somewhere off in the distance and screaming ‘ice cream truck!!’ to our parents as we sprinted around scrounging up coins. ALDI has decided to ignite that nostalgia with its very own ice cream truck, which is headed to Sydney, Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast.

The truck will be serving up ice creams from just 36 cents, with all of the treats costing less than a dollar.

All of the ice creams are actually available in ALDI, with the whole campaign aimed at highlighting the affordability of shopping at the supermarket.

Here’s where you’ll be able to snap up a sweet treat at the ALDI ice cream truck:

When: Thursday 30 January, 11am – 3pm
Where: Balmoral Reserve (near the Rotunda), 8 The Esplanade, Mosman NSW 2088

VIC
When: Sunday 2 February, 11am-3pm
Where: Green Point Reserve, Brighton VIC 3186

QLD
When: Saturday 8 February, 11am-3pm

Will you be chasing down the ALDI ice cream truck?

  • Oh now if this was a fulltime thing im sure it would be a huge success.
I love the great prices and this would be awesome for families as often getting the kids and ice cream becomes a very expensive venture.
I would go for a jellytop. I love those

  • I used to love hearing the Mr Whippy tune and racing out to the kerb to meet the van to get a delicious ice-cream. It was a big highlight but that stopped a long time ago. I know I’ll never go to their van because even if they do all of the states, living in a rural area we’d miss out as usual. That’s okay though because we have Yummilicious and they do soft serve as well as flavoured ice-creams and lots of delicious lollies.

  • Aldi strikes again! I love how they ooze value and even in an ice-cream truck way which we all have fond memories of as children. I really hope they come by close to our home so that my kids get to experience this. We don’t get ice-cream trucks come down our street.

  • Brings back very happy memories. The prices are funny though, 36 cents? Does that get rounded down? 😀

  • Man, I hope this is a concept they role out across more locations in Australia. It was always such an exciting thing to actually hear that magical sound. You heard it and you just had to have an ice-cream! We have a local senator in Tassie currently trying to get an Aldi store here, it would be wonderful!

  • That’s cool but those locations are going to be so busy

  • No as usual WA does not come into play, Like TAS we are a forgotten state. Why can things like this happen in more places or even on a special day at major shops. Feels like only a select few get to have use of this. Good luck to those that can have a go at it.

  • Unfortunately I dont live nearby the location but this sounds great.

  • Aldi have done really well with the retro icecream van. It looks amazing and at those prices, it’s very affordable. Great advertising for Aldi as well. We have an Aldi not too far away, but unfortunately no icecream van here as yet. I hope they will expand as it becomes more popular.

  • What a shame we don’t have an ALDI where I live, I love the look of the van and those icecreams are a great price!

  • What an awesome idea and love the how cheap these are. Most ice cream trucks charge so much for ice creams. If only it was coming to WA as I reckon it would be so well received over here. Those who get to experience this are very lucky. Great for the pocket as well

  • Those prices are amazing and if this truck was in WA I would definitely be chasing it down. Unfortunately it’s not so I guess I’m just going to have to go to ALDI instead. What a great way to promote their store. I’m going to be thinking of icecreams all day now 🤣

  • Wow, those are very cute and what a reasonoble / low prices ! I hadn’t heard about it yet, but then we’re not in Sydney, Melbourne or the Sunshine coast. I’m sure they will be a massive hit in these area’s. I wonder what the reason is they that Aldi takes this initiative and limited to 30 January, 2 February and 8 February in those 3 specific area’s ?

  • This is a really novel idea and I am sure it is going to be a big hit. I can imagine the cues will be long as many excited kids line up. As one Mum said below the pricing is weird. With low prices it would have been better to round them off to 5c so kids can pay in coins.

  • I really do like this initiative from Aldi but am somewhat perplexed by the prices of some of the ice creams. Do people pay with cards as the amount of money for some of the ice creams would be tricky to pay for with coins. There are no longer 1 cent and 2 cent coins in circulation and does that mean rounding the money.

  • It’s a great idea and if it came anywhere near us, I’d happily patronise it. I bet my kids wouldn’t argue with that!

  • We are so lucky that we have an ice-cream truck coming around our area every school holiday time and sometimes on hot weekends during summer. After the first loop the driver knows where the children are that will be wanting/having an ice-cream and concentrates on those streets. There are always children running out for the ice cream from the truck as Greensleeves is still played.

  • Yes, I do believe the old neighbourhood Mr Whippy van is an Australian childhood right of passage! This is a great activation that is fun, engaging and impactful. Here’s hoping the concept is so popular it’s extended to every location with an Aldi so the rest of the country can enjoy!

    Good Different!

  • I have very fond childhood memories of ice cream trucks and we have one that still makes trips around the local streets. We hear the well known tune on the weekends and it is the ice cream truck. It still brings delight to so many people. This is a fun retro idea and some of these ice creams do look yummy!

  • That’s a very clever promotion. There are certainly a few discontinued ice creams from my childhood that I’d like to see again – does anyone else remember Midnight Mints? Yes, an ice cream.
