So, there are people in Australia who actually share their vanilla slice – and you strange folk have been cutting it wrong your whole lives.

I’m not one to share a vanilla slice, but I appreciate that cutting one up – especially some of the towering vanilla slices available in country bakeries across the nation, isn’t the easiest thing to do.

So the culinary geniuses at Ferguson Plarre’s Bakehouse have shared a now-viral video showing the simple way to cut a vanilla slice that won’t result in a custardy mess.

It’s as simple as turning the slice onto its side, so that the knife glides straight through, instead of smooshing everything down. Easy peasy.

Now there’s no excuse for not sharing your vanilla slice. Other than the obvious!

If only Annott’s would bring back Lattice biscuits and really fulfil our vanilla slice dreams!

  • That makes a lot of sense
I think the vanilla slice is very similar to the Dutch tompouce which is made with a puff pastry. The way I was tought to cut it is by measuring 4 cm pieces on the long sides of the tompouce, mark with a notch in the glaze and then cut the tompouce into equal pieces along these notches. This is best done by sawing very slowly with a sharp bread knife, while holding the top of the tompouce with your other hand.

    • But in general I would say the cutting and the eating can cause a lot of mess. I think the easiest way to eat is by taking the top off and spreading the filling equally over the top and the bottom and then eat them seperately. Licking of fingers is of course allowed 🙂

  • This is brilliant! The bakery by my house has the best vanilla slice. They are huge so hubby and I usually share one. Will cut it like this next trip.

  • Well if you want to share now you know the correct way. On the other hand, I’d never share my vanilla slice, I’d buy 2 so the other person could have their own

  • I love a good vanilla slice, I will remember to cut it sideways from now on, because when I share with my husband, I have always cut it down the middle.
