Eating outside can be great, except for the annoying flies. There is a solution though, make your own easy and cheap fly traps and kill those pesky flies without fly spray.

DIY fly trap

What you’ll need:

  • Soft drink bottle
  • Tape
  • Old fruit

Method:

  1. Cut the top 1/3 of your bottle off.
  2. Place some old fruit in the bottom of your bottle.
  3. Put the top back on but upside down and tape in place.
  4. Put outside to attract the flies, they go in but they can’t fly back out.

I have some in our backyard and it works wonderfully to get rid of flies.

I found if you place the bottles in the sun, it will attract more flies. You could reuse the bottles and clean it out but I just throw mine out and make a new one.

Try it out and let me know how it goes. Please add comment below.

  • This is a great and cheap idea! I wonder if it works for fruit flies? Would be very handy to hang in fruit trees to stop them from destroying the fruit, rather than buying expensive traps.

  • I am trying this right now as I constantly have flies in my kitchen because my fly screen door fell off and because I have fish I don’t like using fly spray

  • I like the bottle method. We were recently inundated by fruit flies and I used apple cider vinegar to attract them. I have found a few regular flies there as well. For the fruit flies a little dish washing liquid helps break up the water tension and then they drown.

  • I’ve tried a trap like this for mosquitos using yeast and water instead of fruit. The design really works, so I’ll change ‘bait’ and give this a whirl. I love chemical free remedies. Thanks.

  • We are definitely going to try this. They hang around at an exterior of our sliding door. As soon as we open it a fraction we are swamped by flies. I detest using another methods and not being successful anyway.
