Hello!

We’re completely shocked. We knew Target was in trouble but we didn’t realise it was literally hanging by a thread. Around 167 Target stores will be shut down or rebranded in a major retail shake-up.

Owners of the Target brand, Wesfarmers, made the announcement to investors this morning saying that this drastic move was necessary as they shifted their focus from Target to Kmart, which is more profitable.

“For some time now, the retail sector has seen significant structural change and disruption, and we expect this trend to continue,” said Rob Scott, Wesfarmers Managing Director.

“With the exception of Target, Wesfarmers’ retail businesses are well-positioned to respond to the changes in consumer behaviour and competition associated with this disruption.”

It is expected that a review into the financial viability of Target will take place.

Major Changes As Target Stores Close Or Convert Into Kmarts

A few weeks ago, we announced the closure of a few Target stores across three states, but now this shake-up is far more widely spread.

Around 40 larger Target outlets will be closed or converted to Kmarts and 52 Target Country stores will be converted to smaller-format Kmarts.

The remaining 50 Target Country locations will be shut, and a further 10 to 25 large-format Target stores will also close.

Between 122 and 167 locations will either be converted or shut, representing around half of Target’s 284-strong store network.

We do not know as yet as to which stores will be shutting its doors.

Online Improvement

The corporation said that it will also increase its investment in online capabilities of its brands – which we think is very necessary after the Kmart online shopping platform and home delivery network struggled and buckled under increased activity during COVID-19.

“The expansion of our digital offer will provide customers with access to the Kmart and Target products they love, together with over two million products from the Catch marketplace, via home delivery or click and collect.”

We can expect these changes to happen over the next 12 months.

  • Our target closed and became a kmart which is so much better. I dont miss target at all.

  • Always shop in both stores – K-Mart do some things well and Target do others well or better. If our Target goes I will sorry to see it go as K-Mart doesn’t offer me what Target does, so I will have to find another store out of the group bubble. Probably have to go to Adairs, or House or back to Myers.

  • I’m not surprised they have become too expensive and the range too small

  • My local target is becoming a Kmart. I must admit, I do shop at Kmart more regularly so it will be nice to have one closer to home but I will definitely miss our local target. I love their kids clothes

  • I’m so sad to hear this. We’ve just moved to a place where we have a Target and KMart, no Big W so I wonder what this will mean.

  • I am not surprise as we do not shopping at target like before.

  • So disappointing I feel just so CEO can get more money
Target is great especially the target essentials clothing and under wear

  • It’s a shame this is going to happen but I think we’ll find that there will be a lot of other stores closing too. Prices have gone up quite a bit. I usually shop at Target but not willing to drive 2 hours so I do mine online. Will be sorry to see it go.

  • that really is a shame as I find Target products especially clothing, so much for reliable and higher quality than k-mart. I much prefer and always have supported Target so I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that my local doesn’t shut!

  • In this retail climate, it doesn’t surprise me, but I am disappointed because Target have better quality and more variety than KMart …. plus they are closer to me, so more convenient ….

  • No this news doesn’t surprise me really; in the end the public decides by their shopping habits.

  • Shocked and disappointed with this news, as much as we all love to go to Kmart, it’s nice to have the option to go to Target for better quality items, and not to mention brands. Sometimes change sucks!

  • We lost our country Target about 12 months ago and others in the area closed prior to ours so no surprise really. Our nearest big Kmart is a distance away and I’ve always shopped online with them if we haven’t travelled to the actual store for a while and never had a problem with items or delivery. I love Kmart stuff over Target anyway and our country Target had been slowly getting rid of certain items over the years and completely ditched their toy stock a long time before news came out about the closure. Feel sorry for those who will lose their jobs epecially in this economic climate.

  • I hope they offer the range that target has at kmart. It’s nice to have choice of more quality items when needed.

  • I have both nearby and I like having the choice! Yes, Kmart is cheaper but Target have some great stuff (ie the ladies Preview clothes – especially the cocktail dresses). Yes, I prefer Kmart but it would be a shame to see my local Target go :(

  • Really sad to hear. They have amazing quality items

  • We have a target in our little town that I would hate to see shut down as it creates jobs in our town so if it concerts that’s fine by me.

  • I think target is more exxy than Kmart???
Also, there isn’t one close to me so it doesn’t affect me. If I want something from target I usually just shop online.
I like Kmart better any way.
