A top-up shop of milk, bread and butter won’t leave you much change out of $15 these days (and depending on where you go, won’t even cover it!). So we challenged Mouths of Mums members to see just how thrifty they could be with less than 20 bucks.

And what they managed to buy will leave you gobsmacked.

Of course, how far your dollar stretches all depends on where you shop. And we specifically sent our mums to IGA to spend $15 on their Black & Gold range. Could our budget-beating mums get a great haul of groceries for just $15 without compromising on quality? The answer is a resounding yes!

‘Look How Much I Scored!’

Rachel Joy couldn’t believe what she was able to snap up in her $15 challenge shop at IGA.

“I was sent on a mission to spend $15 from my local IGA from their Black & Gold Range & look how much I scored! These goodies will make so many recipes!

  • Rolled Oats for Muesli Bars & Porridge
  • Brown Sugar, Milk & Flours for Cakes & Cookies
  • Pancake Mix for the kids breakfast
  • Pasta for dinner or a salad pasta dish

“The Black & Gold range is packed with quality Ingredients that are super budget friendly. You really do get more bang for your buck without sacrificing flavour or quality!”

‘I Was Amazed!’

Mum Natalie Jacso also took on the challenge and was pleasantly surprised.

“I was given an opportunity to see how many Black & Gold products by IGA I could buy with a budget of $15. I am amazed at how many I bought. This is what I purchased….

  • Black and Gold Lemonade Flavoured Soft Drink 1.25L
  • Raw Sugar 1L
  • Pear Halves 825g
  • Australian Full Cream Milk 1L
  • Australian Canola Oil Spray 400g
  • White Vinegar 2L

“The Black and Gold IGA products are so budget friendly and great quality!”

‘All This For $15?!’

We were incredibly impressed with savvy shopper Bella’s haul – check it out – nine products!

“All this for $15? Yes please. IGA’s Black & Gold range is incredible. I couldn’t believe the variety that you could find.”

  • I have an IGA close to me but must admit that I dont shop there very much at all. Its kind of the place I duck into to grab the odd thing because its near by.
I park in a Coles carpark every day for work so thats where I shop. Its simply a location thing.

  • I have always been hesitant to buy shop brand items as i have had bad experiences in the past but i am loving the reviews of these products, it has changed my perspective on this brand and will be sure to give the products a try. I love the fact that you could get so many items for such a reasonable price and is perfect for those on a budget.

  • I was lucky enough to receive $15 to spend on the IGA Black & Gold brands too. I managed to score 7 items for $15.35. Very happy indeed! But also happier with the quality. Why pay more for other brands when Black & Gold delivers in taste and quality? And how cheerful is the new packaging is opposed to the older style of just bright gold and black. Love it!

  • I agree with Bella! I always believed IGA would be too expensive for our family so I was pleasantly surprised by the black and gold range! You can definitely get great quality products for good value! What’s even better is I get to support my small local businesses! Thanks for highlighting this range

  • I haven’t seen many Black and Gold products at my local IGA. Hopefully more of these products will start appearing on the shelves.

  • I must admit that I’ve always thought of IGA as a more expensive option, because they tend to be the smaller grocery stores – sort of corner stores, almost. So this was a bit of an eye opener. Sadly I don’t think there’s a store very close to me, but I’ll certainly be finding out.

  • It really depends on what you are purchasing. On these particular staples i.e. pasta, etc, I don’t think you would see a lot of variation of price between IGA and Coles. I would be interested to see how much Black and Gold butter blocks cost, because I just realised that butter is now $7 a block at Coles and Woolies!

  • Our local was rather bare of products, did not have much choice of black and gold ptoducts

  • I was quite blown away at the 7 products I was able to purchase with my $15. I thought the porridge, pasta and tomato paste were better than the products I usually purchase. I had no idea how many Black & Gold products there actually are. My store isn’t big but I had plenty to choose from. So glad I was picked to do this survey.

  • I can imagine this was a nice challenge for those who got to be involved ! I don’t have an IGA grocery market near me and can’t remember if I ever shopped there, but it is nice to see they have – like most supermarkets – their own home brand which is cheap and just as good

  • As someone who was homeless last year work my baby, I really do get how tough times are and by far groceries and rent are or biggest costs now he’s a thriving toddler! However, most of these groceries are highly refined foods. No fresh fruit and vegetables, wholemeal flour, pasta, lentils, etc. This challenge could be done differently.

  • I have definitely enjoyed being part of this challenge myself! And i too, was just as surprised at how much value and how much i was able to buy with $20. The products i bought have been great and if not, the same as branded products that you wouldnt even tell without the packaging.
