I am for. I know this subject can be a tricky one and often it’s a debate that gets quite heated.

I am also happy for people to choose and to make their own opinions on the subject. In reality anything we decide for our children is a personal one at that.

Before I had children I worked in doctors surgeries. I would realise later this helped me come to my decision about vaccinating my children when the need arose.

My son was 9 months old when he contracted German measles. A shy 3 months off from having an injection that would have helped prevent him from getting it. At the time I was furious that my child had been exposed and unknowingly we had exposed others during his infectious period.

I knew the dangers that the infection could bring. I worked in a surgery and had seen firsthand what childhood diseases could do. It is not a sight you want to witness.  And in many cases long term damage is felt.

My Aunty contracted Polio when she was a young girl and the effects are life lasting.

I am grateful that there are new studies being done all the time in regards to Modern Medicine. Studies that can help alleviate initial fears.

I am thankful that my children have NOT suffered adverse reactions thus far.

The herd will protect. My children are a part of the herd.

So I vaccinate. I dislike doing it. I dislike my children crying. I dislike hurting them. But I would  dislike more the dangers that could arise. I treat it like insurance. Sure they might not have contracted anything, but I’d rather there is a buffer in case they do/could.

Tuesday is my youngest child’s turn. His four year old immunisations. I know from the outset he is also going to be the most difficult to take.

I’ll hold his hand,

I’ll brace myself.

I’ll soothe his tears.

I’ll remember that in reality it is 10 mins that could save his life.

  • I am for it, and support the regulations coming in to stop children from childcare etc if not done

    • I too also support that law coming through.

  • This one was a really tough one for me. Having worked as a personal carer I have looked after a teenage who was left in a vegetive state after an immunisation for measles. I hesitated to get my children immunised but in the end decided it was the best thing to do. The benefits outweighed the risk.

  • agree, a baby with whooping cough is no fun, too young to have the vacination before 2 months. You realise how important it is to vacinate.

  • I am for it but it is important for people to be informed by professions and not by some search pulled up by google! but everyone has the right to choose – always a sticky topic as people get so defensive about it your child your choice simple!
