Aussie actress and author Madeleine West thought she was going through perimenopause, only to discover she’s pregnant with her seventh child.

The 45-year-old former Neighbours star took to social media to reveal her surprise pregnancy, admitting she had no idea she was expecting.

“WHOOPS!” she commented on her pregnancy reveal, which included a gorgeous bump photo.

“Thought it was #perimenopause I thought WRONG!,” she continued.

“It’s not too much Christmas pudding either. And I couldn’t be happier.

“Not too sure about the title ‘Geriatric mum’ but here we are, and I’m winding back a little to grow this little surprise package I’ve dubbed #007. (Baby number 7, couldn’t help myself)

“I don’t have much more to say right now, but I’ve noticed I don’t hear much about older parents. l know you must be out there. Just seems we are invisible.

“So if you’re expecting later than expected, and tackling early #parenthood in your 40s or 50s, I’d LOVE hear your stories. I’d love any tips you care to share. Like how the heck do you get all the #baby paraphernalia together again after you’ve given it all away???? There’s a terrifying new world of contraptions out there and I don’t know where to start!! HELP!!!”

Her honest post was met with hundreds of supportive comments, many from older parents.

The busy mum already has six children (including twins) – Phoenix, Hendrix, Xanthe, Xascha, Xalia and Margaux – with her ex-partner celebrity chef Shannon Bennett.

  • I dont know who she is but I am very aware of Shannon Bennet who used to own Burnham Beeches in Victoria which my family has a strong connection to.

I always wanted to have six children. My husband met me half way and we had three. Not sure how I would ahve coped being pregnant in my 50’s though

  • I wish her all the best, she’s amazing! I definitely wouldn’t do it but good on her bringing on a new baby to add to her already huge family.
I have admired her for years, working hard and raising her many children especially with her then chef husband, it couldn’t have been easy.

  • I don’t know of her, but what a lovely surprise! It seems she’s very happy with it, so that is most important. I had my first child at 40 years of age and absolutely loved it. My sister in law had her first and natural pregnancy at 47 years of age

  • Congratulations, what a wonderful little surprise. Having such a big family, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of help whether you want it or not. I think this child will be spoilt by his siblings. I’m also glad to see that you are going to cut back on work so you can take care of yourself and your little surprise.

  • That’s so incredible not only to have given birth 6 times prior but also at her age! Gosh it isnt easy at the best of times. What a blessing it is to still be able to conceive. Hoping all goes well with her and the journey of motherhood. Im sure shes pro now!

  • Wow! She’s doing so well for age 45! You wouldn’t guess she was that old! That’s also a huge family and a big commitment. She will need to take things slow now. It’s going to be a real rollercoaster doing the mum thing at her age. I’m tired just thinking about it!

  • What a wonderful surprise! Expecting a seventh child is truly a blessing, even if a bit unexpected. It will certainly keep things lively. You’re an amazing mom, and I’m sure your other children will be thrilled to welcome a new sibling. You’ve got this. Wishing her all the best on this exciting journey

  • In this situation I would imagine other people would also be giving away or selling items that are no longer needed for a baby. We were so fortunate to be given so many items that had hardly been used and others that were in good condition. It was a huge help and saving.

  • Big surprise I bet! But honestly I love seeing big families, you don’t see many anymore.

  • Wow she is having her 7th child, that’s quite a large family. Good for her. No doubt at 45 it was a big surprise for her. Hope she keeps well. I notice each child has an x in the name. Be interesting to find out what baby Number 7 is called. Congratulations to Madeleine.

  • This would definitely be a shock if you thought you were going through pre-menopause. Expecting your 7th child that is going to keep you on your toes. I am sure this lady will be an amazing mum and all their other siblings will be there to help as well. Good luck to her, she has her hands full.

  • I can imagine it being somewhat of a shock, but congratulations and I hope everything goes well. I’m not sure how you can easily get all the paraphernalia together this time round, but I wouldn’t be buying the most expensive unless you plan on having No 8 to be a playmate for this littlie. Guess that also depends on how old your other children are. Maybe checking out baby shops should be on your itinerary to find out about all the new gadgets and if you want them or would prefer to use the tried methods you used before. Good luck.

  • I remember her character Dee on Neighbours and the storyline with Toadie. It was an incredibly moving and ultimately heartbreaking storyline. Congratulations to her on another baby for her family. I can imagine there will need to be a pivot to navigate another pregnancy and care for a young baby again.

  • Well that’s quite the surprise. Congratulations though – and being an older parent has as many advantages as disadvantages.

  • Ah yes the geriatric label didn’t sit too well with me either maybe “mature” or something along those lines would be better but honestly, congratulations to her. 7 children is a mammoth effort at any age so
I wish her all the best and I’m sure this baby will bring the whole family immense joy.

  • This is a scary prospect as the risks go up as you get into your 40’s. I hope she has a healthy pregnancy and all is well but for me, I wasn’t comfortable until my husband had a successful vasectomy. I couldn’t imagine going through pregnancy and labour as well as dealing with a newborn at that age

  • Lovely to see a large growing family, they seem to be a dying breed in recent years. I bet this was a big surprise and I wish them all well with the new addition. I am sure there are a lot of older Mums out there nowadays with many waiting to have kids.
