A new mum has defended her decision to have her newborn daughter’s ears pierced when she was one day old.

Lara shared videos of her adorable baby girl still in her hospital cot, and TikTok follers couldn’t help but spot the newborn’s sparkly earrings.

“I don’t think you should put piercings on your child unless they can tell you if they want them,” wrote one commenter.

“As a mum I am against piercing … it’s her body and she will decide about that herself,” wrote another.

“So do they pierce the ears before they cut the cord?”

However, plenty of people came to Lara’s defence, explaining that in some countries and cultures a baby’s ears are pierced when they are born.

Lara, who has more than 700,000 TikTok followers, said the piercings were done by a medical professional.

“When they are 2-3 days old! They don’t feel the pain like a year or two! The holes are given to them by neonatologists in the hospital at birth.”

She clarified her comment saying, “I meant that the earlobe is much softer, and they don’t feel the pain the same way! She had no reaction.”

  • I bet the mum got her ears pierced purely for social media pictures. She did this for her not her baby. The pain thing is a load of bs and is just an excuse to try justify your actions. Poor bubs, her ears are still going to grow and now she’s lost the choice of wanting a piercing. I had my daughter done when she was three and asked for it!

  • Oh wow only 1 day old I would at least wait until she was a little older

  • I waited until my kids were old enough to ask for them. My first was 11, second 8 and the third and fourth are yet to ask ….

  • I mean…there’s no use for it but at the same time it’s better to get it over and done with as the baby won’t remember the pain?

  • why would you do that to a newborn!?

  • Why pierce a newborns ears? It’s only for cosmetic appearance – not any gain for the baby.

  • Mine had hers in after a year but I believe she was advised by a professional and I am on her side if that is true and meant lesser pain for the child.

  • I wouldn’t do it. It’s too early. I have two boys. No pierced ears here.

  • Wow…very suprised to see a hospital allow this. 1 day old is too soon. Risks infection etc. Must be overseas. Cannot see this being allowed in Australia

  • Had no idea they’d do it in hospital I assume this is overseas.
