Hello!

If you’ve been to a one-year-old’s birthday party in the past couple of years, you’ve no doubt seen the joyful and messy modern tradition of a smash cake.

We even featured some very different takes on the trend (check out this steak smash trend and the most horrifying cake smash ever). The gist of it is that the baby gets to have fun destroying a cake – usually one made specifically for the purpose of smashing. The photos are cute and everyone loves a messy baby!

But what would you do if you went to a birthday party where the host served up the smash cake as dessert – baby drool and all?!

One miffed uncle says he refused to eat the half-masticated birthday cake at his nephew’s birthday party, offending his sister.

“Yesterday was my nephew’s 1st birthday, and my sister and BIL had a little get together at their house,” he explained. “When it was time for cake, they brought out my nephew’s ‘smash cake’ – exactly what it sounds, a cake for the baby to smash up and get icing all over themselves for cute pictures or whatever.

“I kind of imagined that it would be the size of a big cupcake, but they brought out a regular-sized round birthday cake. I just kind of figured they splurged and still expected the cake to just be for him to play around with. BUT. After my nephew had gone at this cake with his bare hands, and stuck his whole face in it, my sister started scooping up the mangled remains and distributing servings to everyone (just a handful of family members.) And everyone else was actually eating it!

“I declined because … seriously? I didn’t want to eat something that has had a baby’s grubby hands and body all over it, and I was surprised that anyone else did.”

“My sister insisted I take a portion and I said, ‘Really, no, that’s gross’. Now … I probably wouldn’t have used the word gross if I wasn’t on the spot, but I was not at all prepared to have to politely decline to eat baby spit.

“My sister was very hurt by that and told me later (on a phone call that I thought was way longer than it needed to be for the severity of the infraction) that she thought I was being extremely judgemental, that it wasn’t a big deal, we’re all family, don’t participate if I really don’t want to but don’t call her gross, etc.”

Would you eat a smash birthday cake? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Oh my god this is disgusting. As adorable as a baby is, I don’t want to eat their drool! For my bubs upcoming 1st birthday next month I’ll be making a baby friendly mini cake for him, no added sugar and sweetened with banana, and buying a cake from woolies for us adults.

  • No thank you, doesn’t appeal to me 😉

  • Agree. It’s gross! I won’t even use a spoon that’s been in my own baby’s mouth. I would decline, but not say gross. People can be quite defensive when it comes to their babies

  • How ridiculous, gross and very unhygienic. Sorry but some new trends just are over the top.
    I would also refuse.

  • She put you on the spot, and unfortunately you used a word that isn’t that diplomatic, but hey, she pushed it on you, and that’s the result. Ideally you wouldn’t have chosen that word, but it us a bit gross! I’m with you, wouldn’t be keen to have it.

  • There is no way I would eat a cake that anyone had put their face into let alone a baby. I can’t believe people actually ate it. I would have turned my nose up at it and just politely said no thanks.

  • I would not eat a smash cake, no, but I would probably have avoided calling it gross. Even if I was thinking it.

  • That is disgusting and gross, totally agree with the Uncle. Why would the Sister think that was a good thing to do? And what is going on with everyone else thinking that it was fine!!!! They are all disgusting!

  • Ew, I wouldn’t want to eat a smash cash after it’s been smashed and messed with.

  • Why would you want your guests to eat that cake. It can be for fun but definitely not for desert.

  • Yeah I’m with the brother. You do t serve smash cake to your guests lol

  • Um yeah the act of eating smashed up grubby cake is gross. The uncle was not calling the child gross!

  • It is gross! No way that i would ever eat such a cake no matter who smashes it, let alone a kid

  • No way, I wouldn’t eat any cake with the fingers of someone else all over it, let alone drool or boogers !

  • I am definitely with the uncle. Personally, I wouldn’t eat a smash cake in any way shape or form.

    • Give me a piece of cake that is beautifully decorated; will happily eat it!

  • No I wouldn’t eat a smashed birthday cake! I would have made an individual cake for the child and had a separate one for the guests. I could think of nothing worse! I am not squeamish however, there is no need for this sort of treatment to occur!!

  • sorry, if youre planning to serve the cake I wouldnt serve the cake the baby smashed to pieces, I think it is gross and should have had cupcakes for the guests instead.

  • How do you get the guests to dance …put some boogie into it.
Eww I would decline on a piece as well …gross is one word that I feel does come to mind.
