A cranky neighbour has chastised a family for letting their children have swings in the front yard and leaving a couch on the nature strip, saying the neighbourhood doesn’t need to ‘look like a trailer park’.

The letter was uploaded to reddit, with the caption, ‘(My) Family just moved in. Got this letter.’

The letter reads:

“Dear New Neighbour,

“We have all lived in this neighbourhood for most of us over 20 years. We all have meetings and talk to each other. We are happy you’re here but you already look like you don’t care what your yard looks like. Swing sets belong in the backyard and PLEASE remove that eyesore of a couch off the curb.

“Our neighbourhood does not need to look like a trailer park. We’re not sure where you moved from but we are certain there were dumpsters on the way that you could have dumped the couch. It looks trashy already!

“Please be considerate of us who keep our yards trash free. Remove the couch! This is not a junkyard.”

The family member who uploaded the letter says the couch is on the nature strip waiting to be collected as rubbish, and that their children play in the front yard.

The letter has attracted hundreds of comments, most of which are scathing.

“There is an extremely high chance the person who wrote this is actively despised by the rest of the neighbourhood already.”

“When it comes to most a**hole neighbours, you’re just the latest victim. Everyone else has probably already been through it with them. A good ‘yeah the neighbours already warned me that you’d do this’ is a great mind f**k for them.”

“Bold enough to write the letter but not bold enough to act like an adult.”

“Why would anyone give a f**k about which side of the house the kids play? Hell, its incredibly common to have no backyard here – just front yard. I’ve never in my life heard someone call a swing set out front trashy. Imo it’s trashy for someone to look at kids playing on a playset out front and think ‘yeah I need to handle this and go out of my way to tell my neighbour what to do with their sh*t.'”

  • I love how this person presents as if they have been nominated by the others in the neighbourhood to send the letter. Its the cowards way as there is no return contact details. I wouold either ignore or post i sign in the front yard saying anyone with issues as to the children playing in the front yard are welcone to lnock on the door and have a chat like grown ups do.

  • Having a friendly conversation can go a long way. The swing set might not fit in the yard, and maybe the front yard is just nicer and more fun for the kids. The couch is an interesting one though. Is it an old could sitting out front, hard rubbish style. That might get irritating, get it removed or hire a trailer and do a dump run.

  • Mmm, I’d be interested to see the neighbourhood.

  • Hahah you’ve got to work with the neighbours!

  • Some people are unbelievable! Who cares if there is a swing set in someone’s yard! The kids need somewhere to play and it is their yard!

  • I would probably be petty and move more things into my front yard.

  • Id feel some type of way had i received this. It could’ve been handled differently

  • The couch would bother me if it was there for a long time, but since it’s out for the trash I assume it hasn’t been there long, so I wouldn’ have raised that. And as for where the kids play – not their business.

  • Welcome to the neighbourhood…..not! I sincerely hope that not all their new neighbours are like this… Such a rude introduction….

  • I think the neighbour has a bit too much time on their hands.

  • Haha, definitely love thy neighbour. I think she needed to give it a bit longer to see if the lounge was a hard rubbish collection. And perhaps there’ sno room in the backyard for a swing set?

  • Always that one person who has to be in control

  • I actually have the same problem in our area where I live but hey its none of my business so I just say nothing I dont want to cause arguments I have enough problems in my life lol

  • The term ‘Trailer park” and spelling of neighborhood and curb and leads me to think again that this is an American post. Wherever is it It’s a little bit rude. I know we all like pride in our neighbourhoods but sadly a swing set in the front yard is not our business.

  • We used to have that type of neighbour in the street. She called the council all the time complaining about the people in her street and made life sour for many. You gave me once a rant about my kids who walked on her drive way to get their ball….

  • How awful for the new family. And with so many houses becoming subdivisions, a front yard is the only green space a lot of kids can play in now. Time for the letter writer to mind their own business.

  • So petty. Let the kids play outside! Glad my neighbours aren’t like this!

  • This person needs to get a life.

  • There are these types everywhere.

Having kids play out the front could, at worst imo, encourage neighbourhood interaction. Kids making friends and playing together. Oh no!
