Customers have labelled Woolworths ‘out of touch’ after the supermarket giant announced it was cutting the price of hundreds of family essentials.

In a bid to win back families struggling with the cost of living crisis, Woolworths announced it was lowering the shelf price on almost 400 essentials and family favourites. It claims the shelf price of included products will drop by an average of 10%, with families spending $150 on their weekly shop set to save an average of $15 a week.

“This isn’t just a short-term promotion; it’s about lower shelf prices on the products we know customers regularly shop for, and providing genuine, lasting and dependable value they can count on,” Woolworths Group CEO Amanda Bardwell said.

“We’ve focused on highly rated family favourites – things like Greek Yoghurt, Frozen Berries, Chicken Schnitzel as well as essentials including flour, bread, rice and nappies. Individually, each lower shelf price might not seem like a dramatic difference, but they will add up to real savings.”

However shoppers say it’s all smoke and mirrors.

“Most of these are prices that have gone up only over the last three months, seems purposeful,” claimed one customer in an online forum.

Another commented, “Who is spending $150 a week on groceries as a family? They’ve reiterated how out of touch they are, once again.”

Another added, “Gaslighting customers into feeling like they are on our side, even though they are the ones who have steadily raised prices to make people suffer and now have the audacity to take a few cents off and call it a cost of living pressure ease. Cut your billion dollar profits, cut your CEO wages and treat your customers with human decency.”

Some of the lower shelf prices include:

  • Woolworths Chicken Schnitzels 600g was $10.50, now $9 (save 14%/$1.50)
  • Woolworths Greek Yoghurt 1kg was $4.20, now $3.80 (save 10%/$0.40)
  • Coca Cola 2L Drink was $4.20, now $3.70 (save 12%/$0.50)
  • Woolworths Middle Bacon 1kg was $13, now $11.70 (save 10%/$1.30)
  • Four N Twenty Party Sausage Roll 500g was $7.50, now $7 (save 7%/$0.50)
  • Woolworths Tomato Squeeze Sauce 500ml was $2.10, now $2.00 (save 5%/$0.10)
  • Woolworths Oats 750g  was $1.70, now $1.60 (save 6%/ $0.10)
  • Woolworths White Sandwich Bread 650g was $2.50, now $2.40 (save 4%/$0.10)
  • Woolworths Frozen Mixed Berries 1kg was $12, now $11 (save 8%/$1.00)
  • Maggi Noodles 12 Pack was $10, now $9 (save 10%/$1.00)

Woolworths said the products will stay at the new lower shelf price at least until the end of the year.

  • Blows me away that Coca Cola is on the list as an essential.
Surely it would be better to drop the price of something like flour or milk rather than a soft drink that in my mind would be a treat and not something that you have to buy the family

  • I still shop at Woolworths but I can only do a monthly shop. It’s definitely worth it for me as I live 2 hours away from the closest store. I have found my shop has gone from an average of $900 down to $700 each time so for me it’s definitely worth going there. In between I get my fruit and veg from our local shop. It gets me out of town and the money I save pays for my fuel and lunch.

  • Aren’t they being investigated right now for fake sale prices? It does feel like more of the same. Not all of those things are staples either – when I’m watching the budget I’m not buying coke, for example. So I suspect quite a few people will feel like the stuff they buy hasn’t reduced much.

  • I agree with the statement that it’s all smoke & mirrors. All these shops are about profit and the suppliers are as bad. Oreos for example are $3 a packet but nearly every alternate week they are $1.50 at Coles or Woolies. This happens with many regular products. Why not just have a steady, reasonable price.

  • Hmm everyone has alot to say but I bet they still shop there. We need to stop doing big shops at Woolworths/Coles. I buy all meats from local butchers even my full cream milk there haha, all fruit/veg from local veggie shops, cleaning products from reject shop, breads/baked items for local bakery (much better tasting and competitive prices $3.40 loaves of bread and bread rolls) basically my weekly shop at either Coles or Woolworths is almost always under $30 as I really outsource to other companies cause I’m sick of them always lying to customers. It’s clear they have MASSIVE profits and they do nothing to help customers. All smoke and mirrors.

  • I rarely shop at Woolworths anymore as I found that there were too many mistakes at our local when I came to the cash register the price was not entered properly and Sale Prices were ignored. I put all sale items in one area in my trolley and watch them like a hawk now. I do buy bigger Jars of pickled veggies at IGA for less than Woolworth and Coles always as this is a staple in our Pantry. I try to buy the bigger bags of items like Oats and Sugar and Flour and buy on-sale items like bread and muffins and Rolls when they mark them down and I freeze them they bake and heatup nicely!

  • Okay, so first of all, everyone knows that they have already raised the prices at least 30% in some instances. This is most noticeable on items I used to only buy when they were on the 1/2 price special. For example, Twisties used to be $1 a packet at 1/2 price. They are now $1.35. That means that the regular price is now $2.70, instead of $20. That’s a huge increase! That’s just one example, there are plenty of others.
After that is considered, a family would need to be actually buying all of the products that they have so ‘generously’ reduced the prices of. A lot of the items mentioned aren’t things I would normally buy. They are more treat foods like Coca-Cola. Once again, they are promoting unhealthy eating, as it’s the more unhealthy items that are cheaper.

  • Most of the slashed food items seem to be their brands. What about other brands than Woolies brand items? I try to budget $150 per week on groceries. It’s hard to do that. It can all add up if you need to get meat or a cooked chicken. Also if you need snack food for the kids lunch boxes as well.

  • Js83 although I also believe this supermarket is out of touch and only ever wanting to benefit themselves ..I was wondering if you could suggest just where we purchase our groceries from. In my area we only have a tiny IGA and they are very expensive..even in larger IGA stores you have to purchase items that are on special as other items are more expensive (most times) than the two big ones. So where do you suggest ? we do not have a Costco close nor do we have a Drakes like I have heard people mention. 🤷‍♀️

  • I have canceled my subscription service with them as there is absolutely NO value in remaining a paid customer.

    * They are removing the 10% discount per month at Big W
    * The free product per month is gone from what I’ve seen
    * I haven’t seen the ‘member pricing’ for some time either
    * The price of delivery is now up to a ridiculous $17!

There is nothing worth paying for in my mind.

  • Each week I check the specials catalogue. 90% of items are convenience, luxury or cleaning products. As others have said, fresh fruit & vegetables and meat would be wonderful to be reduced. I buy the bare minimum and still my shops are over $100 just for the 2 of us. I buy most home brand and cook from scratch. How people with large families manage I really don’t know!

  • They tried. They failed. We still remember what the same products cost us only months ago. We know better. It’s disappointing and offensive for Woolworths to treat their customers like they’re purely thick while they’re bleeding the country dry. Try employing people and offering customer service again. That would be a welcome change!

  • I suspect that with the current cost of groceries that consumers are looking for big saving on staples and on fresh fruit and vegetables and meat. We buy fruit and vegetables and meat from the markets because the prices are quite good and we get good value for our money.

  • no their prices arealways high

  • There is only 2 items in that lot that I would buy. I’d prefer cuts to Fresh Fruit, vegetables and meat we use very few processed foods. Fresh food has become highly priced too.

  • I mean, i can definitely understand the frustration shoppers have with this announcement. It’s a hard pill to swallow with them feeling like theyre doing us a favour and helping us, when they increased prices and had massive profits for shareholders. Definitely not as ‘nice’ as it sounds when they should have always been low.

  • I hate that they do this, then once a product is a lower price, it means it will no longer go on special. So its great to save 10c, if you where buying at full price, but if you needed to wait until it can on special to buy, now you will be paying more!

  • I’d like to see how much these products have increased in price prior to the ‘price cut’. I’ve noticed tenfold increases on the products Mt family by so these small cuts don’t even come close to what they have already put increases on. Bit of a joke really yet, what can we do

  • Won’t make any difference to my massive spending. Each week I spend a minimum of $150-$250 and then every three to four weeks at least $550 on a big shop. I agree it’s a gimmick and not even a good one

  • It’s funny that out of all these “price drop items” I’d be lucky to buy one of them
