If you’ve never heard of pelvic steaming, you’re not alone. Essentially it’s a pelvic sauna and is believed to help everything from infections to cramps – and even detox your ex.

While it’s touted as a healing tool that’s been around for more than 2000 years, pelvic healing is undergoing a new wave of interest thanks to social media (and Gwyneth Paltrow!)

Certified pelvic steaming coach Kyleigh James says pelvic steaming is used as a tool to help women ‘naturally restore and find their rhythm’. She runs a community called The Steam House where members learn how to practice pelvic steaming at home. Kyleigh also shares her tips and tricks on TikTok.

So, what is pelvic steaming?

Pelvic steaming, also known as vaginal steaming, isn’t a new practice. It’s an age-old remedy that’s historically been used for cleansing the uterus and vagina. It’s been famed with helping regulate periods, and ease cramps and bloating.

It involves sitting or squatting over a container filled with herb-infused hot water, which creates a steam. Different herbs help with different ailments, but can include rosemary, calendula, nettle, salt and even rose petals.

Kyleigh explains how women can find relief from all sorts of issues, just from pelvic steaming.

“Your period should never be painful. If it is painful it’s because the uterus is having to work overtime to expel endometrial tissue because there has not been a successful past period or there has been stress throughout your cycle.

“To help unwind that snowball and have a happy, healthy period in the future, you can pelvic steam throughout your cycle to help nourish and support your organ. So that when the period does come, it’s effortless and effective.”

Pelvic steaming is also thought to help with stress, depression, haemorrhoids, infertility, hormone imbalances and just general pain.

Kyleigh has even used it to detox her ex.

Of course, pelvic steaming comes with a warning – steam can be dangerous and of course mixing herbs needs some knowledge, so it’s best to enlist someone like Kyleigh if you plan on giving it a go.

  • interesting concept and i guess it would be worth a shot if you have issues with periods or anything of the like.
Ive had a hysterectomy so not worries for me in that department and I dont really see a reason that i would need to give this a go as yet.

  • Vaginal steaming has the potential to be dangerous. This is because the skin of your vulva is very delicate and could sustain burns. Exposing your vagina to steam and scented herbs could alter its pH and cause bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.
