Hello!

  • Creamy Pasta Sauce

So today I decided to test the Jamie Olive Homecooker to cook a creamy pasta sauce.
Usually cooking a pasta sauce that involves fresh cream requires constant stirring to prevent the cream from sticking to the bottom of the pan as well as prevent it from separating.
The stirring arm played a good part in this recipe.
First it browned the chicken well without sticking and burning. While it was doing this I had time to sit with my kids and look at their homework. i had set the time to 20 minutes and the machine beeped when the time was up. Secondly when I added the freah cream cheese to my pasta sauce the stirring arm helped to combine the sauce together into creamy goodness.
I tried out the steamer basket to steam pasta ravioli, this was a hit and miss as it required a lot of time to steam the ravioli then I had anticipated. I learnt that in order to cook pasta ii really neededtoboil it rathe than steam.
i learnt that food such as pasta reauires a lot of time so it is best to boil pasta using the pasta insert ove hot boilling wate in the homecooker.
The steamer basket worked perfectly fine to steam vegetables ove a hot simmering curry though..
I loved the results and would definately reccomend the homecooker to anyone.
I have uploaded a video of my cooking experience on youtube which you can view by copying andpasting the url below onto your browser.
    Cheers

  • Chicken Cacciatore with Garlic Mash

This recipe is one of my favourites. Its so easy to do & follow even the teenagers could do it! Did contemplate that……only for a minute……..but it was cleaning day today & the kitchen is sparkling so I didn’t want mess every where (party on weekend so wanted to try & keep things in order). To spice things up a little I added a few chilli flakes – just enough to give it a little kick. Tasted delicious with the mash – did make it a little chunky & drier than normal so the sauce could be mixed in! All that I can say is YUM YUM YUM! Now while teenagers slave @ part time job, I’m sitting back with a cider waiting for my creamy rice to cook.

  • Beef Goulash oooh la la!!!!

I knew I had a busy day today with teenager no2 so I thought I’d better cook dinner in advance! Tonight was going to be Beef Goulash! Everything seem to flow like clockwork. I think I might be getting the hang of the Home Cooker & what it can do! The chopping tower sliced the onions in seconds, I added the spices & oil & I was off with 20mins to prepare the meat & other ingredients. After adding the final ingredients I had plenty of time for something else before I had to reset the timer for the next stage. Arghhh- I had left 5 loads of washing to do. The Home Cooker gave me some time to hang, reload & hang again (hmmm is that what my “another set of hands” has done – more time for housework).
Recipe was very easy to follow. The best thing was coming home knowing dinner was done. The vote from the contented family was 5 stars for the recipe (no leftovers). The process of cooking was very simple! Its time to clean the pan & cook the beetroots for salads this week 🙂

  • No more creamed rice in a can

Creamed rice is one of my favourite childhood memories. My Mum made it as it was a relatively easy desert to make but required one of the 6 kids to stand and stir so the milk /rice didn’t stick or burn on the base. It was a job that I quite often got lumped with being the youngest. The older siblings just made it sound so exciting. We always had stewed rhubarb & apple with our rice.
Jamie’s recipe is delicious! Very creamy & full of flavour! I did add a little extra sugar as I wanted sweet rice. Topped it with a little drizzle of maple syrup. I had never used vanilla beans so was excited to taste & see how much they flavoured the rice. Never will I buy creamed rice again. I will be using the HC for this.

  • Mastered!

Well we have mastered the rosemary potatoes! they are so easy & delicious to make that the boys have suggested we make them every night! LOL……have to say that a good hard waxy potato is the best to use to hold its shape & doesn’t get shaved by the stirring arm. Just love to add the ingredients & walk away, come back later to delicious crunchy roasted potatoes. All smiles in this household.

Have been using the HC to make our Japanese curry. Its so easy now as I’m not constantly running back to stir the sauce & ingredients. No more sticking to the base of the saucepan because I’ve forgotten to stir. Love that I have a “little helper”.

  • Spaghetti

The process was very easy to make this sauce. In the past, I would normally be watching & stirring every now & again just so my sauce wouldn’t stick to the bottom of the saucepan. Not today – just walked away & let the Home Cooker do its thing.
Our sauce just didn’t turn out as rich & full of flavour as I would’ve liked. Not sure why – I did however use Pork mince for the first time ever. Normally only ever use beef mince but someone told me to try the pork. Thats OK – I’ll just use my favourite recipe in future. Teenager 1 has enough sauce for Wednesday school lunch!

  • Is it dinner time yet???

I have just put my crispy potatoes on and the house is smelling so amazing that I am salivating. I am planning on adding in some carrots, sweet potato & parsnip with 30 mins to go so hopefully they turn out ok! I love the fact that having the vegies in the home cooker has freed up the space in the oven for my chicken and fish and I don’t have to worry about having different temperatures. Can’t wait for dinner, will fill you in on how it goes 🙂

  • Perfect Risotto

Wow weeee! Have just finished eating the most delicious risotto ever! I was so impressed by the Home Cooker tonight – 5 stars from me. Have never tempted to make a risotto as I thought it was so time consuming standing there stirring the rice. So just thought “Too hard basket”.
The Home Cooker along with Jamie’s recipe made life so much simpler. The stirring arm of the Home Cooker fascinates my family (&me). Its quite mesmerising watching it.
Tonight I spent a bit more time, probably because i was quite nervous tackling a risotto. I did use quite a few extra pieces – saucepan, baking dish & fry pan. I didn’t mind as we have a rule in our house – if you cook you don’t clean up! So I just sat back while the family cleaned.
The thing I love the most is the cutting tower which I used for the onions, celery & cheese. The celery was a little awkward but I quickly worked out the best way to grate it. It makes less mess with no more little pieces flying around the kitchen (this is usually the kids job). Love the design of the cutting tower, fitting nice & snug against the pan.
Great recipe! Look forward to making this one again.

  • Broad Bean & Asparagus Risotto & Chorizo Sausage

Well I must say I am really loving these 2 appliances. I was going to put them in the cupboard when not in use but I am using them most days especially the chopping tower! I think I have used the chopping tower every night since I received it. Very easy to assemble blades that just click into place & click to remove!
Tonight was the Broad Bean & Asparagus Risotto (didn’t have the peas so just deleted them). Very simple & easy recipe to follow. I was feeling confident as had used the Home Cooker to create a previous Risotto. Last time I nervously watched & hoped it was going to work. Tonight I just followed the recipe and walked away confidently. The Chorizo Sausage was for teenager No 1 who is not quite sure about the “risotto” meal. I thought if I added the chopped sausage it would appeal to him more. But still had no success in winning him over. Teenager No 2 however enjoyed it thoroughly – which is surprising as he is normally the fussy one. Husband loved the whole minty, zesty lemon flavour.
Have found the clean up to be easy as have had plenty of “spare” time during the cooking phase to clean up before dinner, just leaving the pan to clean.
Have found a recipe for some steamed ginger cakes so am thinking I might try that tomorrow night when teenagers are at work :).

  • Being brave - Chilli Garlic Chicken & Chorizo Sausage

Teenager no 1 has always been a big eater! To combat the lunch time appetite has been making a large salad with chicken strips. I thought I might try & cook the strips in the Home Cooker. After infusing the oil with chilli, garlic, thyme & rosemary for about 15mins, I added a chopped chorizo sausage (I didn’t realise how much oil these would release) & fried them for about 10mins, turned the heat down & added the chicken for about 15mins. Probably need to experiment some more but the chicken taste tested by the teenager has got the thumbs up! Teenager cant wait to have his turn on Wednesday for some more experimenting chicken strips. It was much easier than standing by the BBQ and turning the strips. Chicken has remained moist. Lately teenager had been overcooking his chicken. Now with the help of the Home Cooker he will have moist chicken strips with his salad.

  • Cutting tower review

I decided to do Jamie’s Bolognese and use the cutting tower, now the carrot, I have to say was so easy and shredded beautifully, apart from the last tiny bit, but the onion and garlic, not so much. Both seemed to get stuck and the layers of the onions just seemed to rip off and caught in the gap between the grating disc and the lid and the same with the garlic. It took me a good 10 minutes to get most of the onion in and it seemed to ‘juice’ the onion rather than grate it. I felt like I had so much washing up to do afterwards for such a small amount of chopping. On this occasion I would have been much better off chopping them myself with a knife. I think I will only use this in future if I have a lot more chopping/grating/slicing to do. I will attempt the onion again as I am sure there is a trick to it, but will invest in a garlic crusher in future rather than try it in the tower again.

  • The HomeCooker's great for creating side dishes too!

The thing I really like about the Jamie Oliver HomeCooker is its flexibility in the kitchen. Apart from whipping up various main meals it is also handy for creating side dishes or even just steaming vegies.

I’ve now used the HomeCooker multiple times to make side dishes such as Jamie’s Rosemary Potatoes and more recently a delicious cheesy vegetable bake, served as a side dish alongside our barbequed meat. I was a little nervous about leaving the HomeCooker to do the stirring for the cheese sauce but set at 130 degrees it spun around whilst I added the milk, cheese and garlic to the butter and flour. A few times I poked my wooden spoon in the mix just to check it wasn’t burning on the bottom but it was all OK so no need to worry next time.

Further into the trial I continue to use the Cutting Tower whenever a meal requires me to cut up multiple pieces of vegetables however if I only need a carrot or two sliced then I still find it more convenient to just use a knife as messing up the Cutting Tower hardly seems worth it.

I’m thinking that sometime soon I should have a go at making a dessert with the HomeCooker as I am yet to make something sweet with it. Maybe something like a Chocolate Fondue – since that is guaranteed to be a hit with my kids!

  • easy to use - I still have not read the instructions

I had no meat our for tea tonight so I thought I would do some risotto. I vaguely followed the recipe in the book with out any bacon. I used about 500g of rice so it took about 40 mins to cook the rice. I didn’t have to stand there & stir and stir and stir. So I washed the dishes & cleaned out the guinea pigs cage. I am also thinking that every dish I have cooked is Orange!!!

  • easy to use - I still have not read the instructions

I wanted to cook some pumpkin mini tartlets to take to my daughters end of year concert. While I was cooking tea I had the pumpkin mixture slowly cooking & stirring in the JO Home Cooker. Well I cooked about 5 times too much for the amount of volauvent cases that I had so I thought – that will be the quick dinner for the next night. So the next night all I had to was boil pasta & reheat the pumpkin sauce & there it was – pumpkin pasta.

  • Risotto, porridge, rice pudding and a trip to hospital!

Over the last few days my HomeCooker has had a workout with a range of recipes spanning dinner, breakfast and dessert, proving what a versatile kitchen appliance it is. On Monday night Jamie’s butternut squash risotto with crispy pancetta and sage cooked itself while I had to take my son to hospital unexpectedly and my husband was busy cleaning vomit out of his car and looking after our daughter! Unfortunately I didn’t get to eat it until 10:30 that night but my daughter apparently loved it and it still tasted pretty good even though my husband and I had to heat it up later. I’m sure it would have been absolutely delicious if we’d had it four hours earlier! But was glad to come home to dinner cooked rather than have to grab takeaway on the way home from the hospital.

Yesterday for breakfast I made porridge using the HomeCooker. Porridge is a bit of a favourite with my husband, daughter and myself but I often manage to burn the bottom or at least stick it to the bottom of the pan or overcook it so it goes a bit gluggy (usually because I am doing about 10 things at a time in the morning rush). The HomeCooker makes it really easy to make perfectly, even when there is a million things going on in the morning. I used Jamie’s recipe with banana and toasted almonds, for a change. I had run out of maple syrup so I just used brown sugar and I also added cinnamon into the porridge. The result was really yummy. Will definitely be using the HomeCooker to cook porridge from now on.

Tonight I used my old fashioned oven to cook a roast so used the opportunity while my HomeCooker was not being used to make my favourite dessert from my childhood, rice pudding. I used Jamie’s recipe and made a rhubarb and raspberry compote to serve with it. If I do say so myself it was one of the best things I’ve tasted in a long time! Here is the recipe for the compote:

    Rhubarb and raspberry compote

1 bunch rhubarb, trimmed and cut into even lengths, approx 2 cm each
    60g raspberries (frozen are fine)
    60g castor sugar
Juice and zest of one orange
    Cinnamon stick

Put all ingredients in a saucepan when rice pudding has about 10-15 mins to go in the HomeCooker. Cover, bring to boil and then reduce heat and simmer for about 5-10 mins until rhubarb is soft. Remove cinnamon stick and serve with rice pudding.

  • That magic stirring arm is my new best friend!!

Doing the kids’ favourite tonight – spaghetti bol. Hubby and I will have a marinara mix with our pasta which the kids won’t eat. The mince is in Jamie’s stirring pot with my freshly picked herbs and my home made spaghetti sauce. Jamie can sort the kids out while I cook up my marinara. Just love this thing!!

  • Knowing it better!

Day By day,I getting more used to my new Home cooker and knowing it better. All the functions and uses, how to get most of them.I am feeling more happy and loving it. it is a bliss in kitchen to have.wow! I am getting more spare time to watch tv or read magazine or just do other chores.my kids are noticing the difference not only in food but also in mum’s mood,as more relaxed and more time to spend with them as well. I love cooking, but with kids ,it is bit over whelming,as you have to think so many things at a time and at the back of my mind I have got this alarm ticking ,to check the food ,if it’s burning,it’s cooked or not? gas burner is on slow or medium or not switched off,so many things and thoughts. But now I am enjoying it more to cook my favourite food,as I can leave the most of job on my Jamie Oliver home cooker with time and temperature adjusted and stirrer on,its a breeze! Most importantly easy to clean, rarely stirrer couldn’t move the food at the bottom if its very small in quantity,or some thing gets stuck, but otherwise I never have any problem of cleaning it.
Not only this ,cutting tower made it so easy to cut and slice the vegetables and salad,My family enjoy it eating ,evenly and nicely sliced cucumbers and carrots.Thinly grated cabbage in a salad mix.my son is very excited and ever ready to do it for me,as he loves to do and watch slicing vegetables coming out of tower with diferent speed.at first it took some time for him to judge the speed and flow,as those were all out of reach for a second. My husband is happy as he also feels like a master chef in the kitchen now, trying some of his recipes with minimum effort. in short our whole family is engaged some how with this new revolution,we are joined.I would recommend this to each and every mum to buy one ,its a must have equipment in kitchen and would replace all other.

  • Philips/Jamie Oliver HomeCooker - Pros and Cons

I’ve been using the Philips/Jamie Oliver HomeCooker for almost two weeks now, so I thought it was time for a summary post of the pros and cons I’ve discovered so far.

    PROS
The stirring arm is a fantastic asset when cooking meals. From toasting flaked almonds to cooking a curry or risotto, the stirring arm frees me up to take care of other things and ensures that if I’m distracted while preparing dinner (by phone calls or requests to help with homework for example), whatever I’m preparing doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan and burn. The HomeCooker doesn’t necessarily mean that meals will be prepared any faster than previously, but the stirring arm feature means that I am not forced to stand at the stove, or even remain in the kitchen, while meals are cooking to ensure that they are stirred regularly, thus freeing me up for other activities.

The HomeCooker is versatile, suitable for a variety of main course or side dish meals. I can imagine that it will be permanently on my kitchen bench in the colder months when I regularly cook casseroles, stews, soups, risottos and curries. I’m also looking forward to proper porridge for breakfast, even on school mornings, thanks to the stirring arm.

The controls are easily to understand and intuitive to use. There are a range of programmed temperature settings, a timer (adjustable up to 99 minutes) and an on/off switch for the stirring arm. Temperature settings can easily be adjusted between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

The 3L base pan is a reasonable size/capacity for preparing family meals, with plenty of space to prepare a meal large enough for an average family dinner + leftovers.

The Jamie Oliver recipe book that comes with the HomeCooker gives a great overview of the types of recipes that the HomeCooker is best suited to. By trying recipes from the cookbook, you get a good idea of temperature settings and adjustments to use with your own recipes. The recipes from the cookbook (+ more) are also available on the Philips Homecooker website. You can also access additional recipes by registering your HomeCooker on the Philips website.

The pot, steaming basket and pasta insert are easy to clean.

Safety features and the simple controls mean that the HomeCooker could be safely used by older children. The manual suggests children 8+ years, but I would recommend children of that age would still need close supervision. Children 12+ should be able to use the appliance unsupervised with reasonable safety and success.

    CONS
The unit is moderately large. Although the vertical design means that it doesn’t take up any more room than necessary, it is still takes up a moderate amount of bench space, which might be an issue if you have limited space available.

The HomeCooker doesn’t completely eradicate the need to use the stove top. Curries etc still require a separate pan to cook rice.

The design of the stirring arm can make it tricky to clean, although if left in the pan with some water to soak, it should wipe clean reasonably easily. Extra attention needs to be given to angles where food can become caught.

The handle of the glass lid can become hot if sitting on the pot for an extended time. The surface of the handle is quite smooth, so you need to make sure that you have a firm grip before lifting the lid from the pot.

Choosing the appropriate temperature setting is not intuitive. The manual offers a general guideline to the function of each setting (40°C – melting, 110°C – boiling, etc) but trialling recipes from the cookbook is the best way to gain an understanding of how temperature settings can be adjusted throughout the preparation of dishes to get the best results. This takes some time and attention.

The shape of the pan, with the spindle in the centre to facilitate the stirring arm, can make it awkward to serve some dishes, such as the pan-cooked breakfast.

    OVERALL
I think that the HomeCooker will be an appliance we will use frequently, although probably more often in colder months and less in summer. It is particularly useful for preparing larger meals, rather than individual portions, and I’m sure that it is something that I will find myself using more and more frequently with my own recipes over time.

I have been impressed with the versatility so far and have definitely appreciated the stirring arm feature, which has already saved a meal from disaster when I was interrupted one evening by an urgent phone call.

I think that the negative aspects of the appliance, listed above, can be easily overlooked in light of the strengths, which will definitely make preparing evening meals in our home much simpler and less time consuming.

  • Creamed Rice To Die For

After my day of small mishaps, I have to say, I am still completely in love with the Jamie Oliver Home cooker–especially after making the delicious creamed rice from his cookbook that came with the home cooker (what a bonus!)
It was, in short, to die for. I used risotto rice as I couldn’t find the rice he specified (pudding rice I think it was called) and we added brown sugar and mixed berries to the servings. The kids couldn’t get enough of it, not to mention hubby and I. Besides the taste, the best thing was I didn’t have to stand over a hot pot stirring on that warm afternoon. The stirring arm–how did I ever live without it before now?

  • Steamed asian salmon

I decided to try a recipe that would test some different functions of the Homecooker this time, namely boiling and steaming. The steamed asian sea bass recipe fit the bill perfectly and sounded so yummy, although I chose to swap the sea bass for salmon.
The process was surprisingly easy – boil the rice in the insert, then mix with asian spice paste, spread into the steamer basket and put the fish on top. Simple as that! Having never steamed fish before I was surprised how easy it was. And the flavours were superb.
Only slight issue was that the rice wasn’t quite cooked so I popped it back in for another 10 mins. Perhaps it should have been boiled for longer initially.
Highly recommend using the Homecooker for steaming fish like this. The recipe was super yummy, very easy to cook AND healthy too! What more can you want?

  • Charcoal black sticky pot-roast beets!

Oh dear… and things were going so well!! You may be wondering why there is no photo of my delicious Jamie inspired sticky pot-roast beets! Well, the reason is because they are all burnt and in the bin! It’s not Jamies fault, or the Homecooker – I take all the blame! Things were going so well. I set the Homecooker up, added the beetroots with the olive oil and thyme and got it all stirring nicely. Whilst admiring the beautiful aroma coming from my kitchen, I forgot that I hadn’t used the right amount of beetroots that Jamie recommended, and I didn’t decrease the time on the HomeCooker. The beautiful smell filling the longe room quickly became a charcoal barbeque smell – and I rushed up to turn the HomeCooker off. But, it was too late and I had ended up with 20 shrivelled black balls. Oh dear! So much for my healthy, fresh nutritious dinner for everyone! As I had no time left to prepare dinner as I had to take my daughters to their swimming lesson, it was takeaway hot chips for them and a tin of soup for my husband!! At least I have learnt from this experience – keep checking the Homecooker to make sure things don’t burn and if using a lesser amount than the recipe then reduce the cooking time! Let’s hope my next meal is an improvement…!

  • Chicken Korma a hit

Tonight I cooked Chicken Korma, and it was a hit!! How easy was it to cook the nuts, slice the onions, and not have to stir everything all the time.
I did have my first accident with it though slicing my finger which drew a bit of blood. Another reviewer has mentioned that she wishes the slicing blades had names on them, and I agree. I was trying to compare the slicing blades to see which was thicker, and managed to cut my finger in the process.
On a positive note, the thick blade sliced the onion really well, much better than the grating disaster from last week.
There was still some thick mess on the bottom of the bowl that the stirring arm didn’t get off. Washed off OK though.
Will make this again, with some more chilli:)

  • Master Chef Mother-In-Law approved the Granola - and requested more!!

    Hi
My wonderful Mother-in-law is an amazing cook, and so to find something that I cook that she raves about is a nice treat;)
I gave her some of the Granola last week that I had made, and she loved it so much she requested more. So I made another batch on the weekend for her. This time I doubled the recipe (so we had some to keep here) and it cooked well. Success again, I still love the versatility of the Philips Jamie Oliver Home Cooker. I did mention how yummy this was to my friend who has a Thermomix, and she is going to attempt the recipe and we can compare.
My other success was I put all the items in my 9 yo dishwasher for the first time and they came out clean as a whistle. I will try this again with something a bit messier to see how it cleans up (my dishwasher isn’t great now, so we will see)

  • Bacon & Eggs are a breeze

    Hi
We had Bacon & Eggs the other night for dinner (yes I know, most people have it for breakky but Hubby requested it for dinner). It was so easy to make, and tasted great. I cooked it to the recipe in the book, although like many of the recipes, I doubt it would feed 4, it struggled to feed the 2 of us adults and bacon for the children. (My girls preferred boiled eggs)
This time I relaxed and actually helped around the house whilst the HomeCooker cooked for me, such a time saver as our guests had left at 6.30pm!!
See photo attached of it being cooked.
This will certainly be on the menu again.

  • DAY 8: THE HOME COOKER DINNER PARTY!

My brother is leaving Australia to follow his dreams in the U S of A. I’m really, really happy for him (but a little sad too), so I thought by preparing him a beautiful, three-course dinner (using the Home Cooker, of course!) it would be the perfect way to say, Bon Voyage!

If you read my last review, I was planning to incorporate last night’s Sticky Pot Roast Beets into tonight’s dinner party. I was thinking of mixing the cold beets with cous cous, green beans and rocket to make a lovely, fresh entree. Thing is, I found out that my brother doesn’t actually like beetroot, so that idea was out the window!
Instead, I decided on a Thai style dinner party. The meal plan was as follows:

Entree: Pork & Coriander Spring Rolls

Main: Red Chicken & Vegetable Curry

Dessert: Banana Fritters with Vanilla ice-cream and Caramel topping

I’ve made all these dishes before, but not in the Home Cooker, so it would be interesting to see how it was going to all work out (Spoiler Alert – it did!)

I started on the Red Curry at 3:30pm, with the aim of having it cooked by 5pm. This was actually a good amount of time, as the Home Cooker did its magic, mixing the chicken, vegetables and spices into the coconut milk over a low heat. I used the Chopping Tower to finely slice the onions, and the dish turned out creamy, spicy, sweet and delicious!
Afterwards, transferred the curry into another pot, washed out the Home Cooker pot and started on the spring rolls.

The Home Cooker instruction booklet specifically said not to use the product for deep-frying, but it didn’t say anything about shallow-frying, so I thought I’d take a chance.
The spring rolls are pretty easy to make – just time consuming. Mix pork mince with spring onions, grated carrots and coriander. Season, then wrap in spring roll wrappers and fry until golden.
I put the temp up to the highest setting (250 degrees), which initially seemed a bit excessive, but with the lid off, the spring rolls took surprisingly long to cook (almost 10mins per batch).

I kept the oil from the spring rolls in the Home Cooker pot and after dinner, did a quick fry up of the banana fritters. If you’ve never made banana fritters before, they’re surprisingly easy. Mix plain flour with a little baking powder, salt and water until you form a batter. Dip in the banana and fry – Yum!
My second attempt at shallow frying in the Home Cooker was more successful than the first. The bananas cooked within 5mins and were so yummy with the ice-cream and caramel topping that I had to stop myself from going back for seconds!

So what have I learned about the Home Cooker over the past week and a bit?
Well, I’d like to think that I really can cook like Jamie Oliver! (He, of course, might argue otherwise). And now that I’ve had a really good play with the Home Cooker, I can see myself using it – a lot. Especially when the weather cools down and I start craving really hearty dishes.

It’s a great product – Easy to clean. Easy to use. Well made. Versatile. It really ticks so many boxes.
I’d just like to finish off by saying a big Thank You to Mouths of Mums and Philips for giving me the opportunity to try this fabulous new machine. It really has found a place in my home 🙂

  • Rice

Tonight was an easy night – we were having a previously cooked & frozen left over curry! Needed to cook some rice. We had a rice cooker but gave it away as we were never using it. Now, normally I cook rice in my microwave. Have never really mastered this to perfection with just the right amount of water and rice. Also, my water always spills out of the container leaving me with the microwave plate to clean. The Home Cooker instructions don’t really say too much about the pasta insert re time & water amount so I was hoping one of the recipes talked about the use! Thank you Jamie for thinking of people like me that need instructions! So I followed the recipe of the Steamed Bass of how to cook the rice. I used a long grain rice. The kids really liked it! Funny how a different cooking process can change how rice is cooked! It was so light & fluffy. Very easy & less mess for me to clean. Alas we gobbled into our dinner & then I remembered …….PHOTO……….so no photo tonight!

  • sharing food anddhappiness with friends!

this weekend we had a blast with our Home Cooker,I invited my few friends to come over and share the great food cooked in My Jamie Oliver Home cooker.I made south Indian dish Sambar in other words Thick Lentil Soup with Mixed Vegetables, which is like a casserole vegetable stew but very different in recipe and taste.we usually serve it with rice or the steamed rice dumplings or the rice flour crepes.there is nothing compared to the aroma and flavors of this ,Sambar.
    here is a simple recipe,
Ingredients:(easily available from Indian grocery store)
    1 cup split red gram
    1/4 kg Vegetables(mix vegetables )
    1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds
    3 Red chillies
    3 Green chillies
1 tsp Sambhar powder(available from Indian grocery store)
    Curry leaves
    1 tsp Salt
    2 tsp Mustard
    1/4 tsp Tamarind paste
    4 tbsp Cooking oil
    Procedure:
Wash and dice all the vegetables.
Boil water and cook the split red gram (lentil) with turmeric and salt.it takes long time you have to keep boiling until the lentils are cooked well and forms curry like texture.approximately 1 hour.
Separate the cooked split red gram and water, and keep them aside.
    clean wash the cooker again.
Heat some oil in a pan, splutter mustard, then add fenugric seeds, red chillies, green chillies, curry leaves, turmeric, and sambhar powder and keep frying for a few minutes. Now add the cooked thuvar dal and simmer for a few more minutes(around 20 minutes)
and the awesome dish is ready to serve hot with rice.

  • DAY 7: STICKY POT-ROAST BEETS

Confession: I’ve never cooked with beets before (Ooh Ahh!)
But seriously, my experience with beetroot has been in salads, sandwiches and the odd burger. So when Jamie’s Home Cooker recipe book had a page entirely devoted to Sticky Pot-Roast Beets, I thought, yes, I’ll try it! Better still, beetroot was on sale at Woolies, so it was meant to be!

The recipe is pretty straight-forward. Pop the cut beets into the Home Cooker with some olive oil and herbs, cook on high (250 degrees) for 30mins, add some balsamic vinegar, orange rind and juice, then cook on high for another 30mins. The Home Cooker both steams and roasts, while keeping the beetroot moving, and as the machine was doing its thing, I managed to fold two baskets of laundry.

The result was good, but I wouldn’t be in a great rush to make this recipe again. The balsamic vinegar seemed to have burnt a little, so although the beets were tender and sweet, there was a very faint burnt after-taste to the dish. Then again, maybe I should have cut down the cooking time by 5 or 10 minutes? Also, the remnants made a bit of a mess in the Home Cooker, so I’ll have to soak the pan overnight and give it a wash in the morning.

I served the beets as a side dish with lasagne and had enough left-over for tomorrow’s official Home Cooker Dinner Party!

    Stay tuned!

Whether you’re a seasoned or first-time mum, protecting your baby’s delicate skin is right up there on the priorities list. Because when their skin is irritation-free, it really does make for a happier bub! Anyone who’s had to deal with nappy rash (me included!) knows it’s an inescapable mum truth.

Having skin irritation as an adult is super distracting and annoying. So just imagine what that’s like for our teeny babies and toddlers, who need to focus on sleep, eat and play. No wonder they can be so upset when they have nappy rash.

One thing you do need to ditch when it comes to nappy rash is mum guilt. It happens despite our best efforts. But it is helpful if you can get ahead of the game by doing as much as you can to try and prevent nappy rash in the first place.

We asked our hundreds of thousands of Mouths of Mums members for their tried-and-true, trusted nappy rash tips, and their responses came down to four key tips. So if you’re about to have your first baby, or your fifth, it’s worth popping on the kettle and reading through what’s helped other mums.

Fail-Safe Nappy Rash Tips From Mums

What we love about these tips is they’re perfect for mums and expecting mums, and they’re really simple to do. Everything from what to use and what to steer clear of, to helpful hints on caring for delicate baby skin.

1. Nappy Free Time

“As much free nappy time as possible. Lay baby on a blanket covered with a towel on the floor, without a nappy on, if possible in front of a warm sunny window.” – Joanne W.

We love nappy free time for newborn and toddlers (although it’s a lot harder to get them to stay in one place!). And while nappy free time is one of the most popular nappy rash tips among our mums, using the right nappy also plays a huge part in protecting against irritation on your baby’s skin. For example, Huggies Ultra Dry Nappy Pants have clever Rapid-Dry™ Technology, which instantly absorbs for drier skin. And they’re perfect for day and night, with up to 12 hours of leakage protection.

2. Change Nappies Frequently

“For me, what worked on my two kids is not leaving them in soiled nappies too long. I definitely changed as soon as they were wet and let their skin air dry before placing a new nappy on. I would rather go through more nappies than have to deal with the uncomfortable rash they would feel.” – MoM Member

Frequent nappy changes are a fail-safe way to keep moisture, but it’s not always practical (babies just love to fill their nappies while you’re out and about!) Huggies Newborn Nappies are designed to help protect a baby’s delicate skin with a zinc-enriched layer*, clinically proven to help protect against skin irritation.

3. Use A Barrier Cream

“My mum put me onto Zinc and Caster Oil cream. It is FABULOUS stuff! It’s very thick and sticks like you know what to a blanket hehe I tried literally everything and this was the only stuff that helped.” – Trudes

Using a barrier cream was another really popular tip from our mums. But did you know that Huggies Newborn Nappies are the only nappy with a zinc enriched layer. The zinc oxide in Huggies Newborn Nappies is the same ingredient found in many nappy rash creams, which helps to protect against irritation with visibly less redness on skin. They’re also endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives and the number one choice in Australian hospitals.

4. Choose Gentle

“Don’t use scented wipes. Flannel and warm water is the best.” – Justine F

Using the most natural product possible for wiping a baby’s delicate skin to prevent irritation is a tip that’s been passed down from generation to generation – and it’s still a great one. But something lots of mums don’t consider that a nappy itself can help protect against skin irritation. Huggies Newborn Nappies are clinically proven* to help protect against skin irritation while Huggies Ultra Dry Nappy Pants keep up with wriggly little ones while providing superior dryness, making them perfect for active toddlers.

Nappy Rash Myths & Facts

🚫 Myth: Nappy rash is only caused by wet nappies.
✅ Fact: It’s true that moisture does play a role in nappy rash, it can also be caused by moisture friction, bacteria, and even what the nappy is made from.

It’s why choosing a nappy that’s specifically designed for skin protection is really important.

🚫 Myth: Cloth nappies are better at preventing nappy rash than disposable nappies.
✅ Fact: When it comes to nappy rash, there’s not really any need to compare cloth and disposable nappies, because it’s all about keeping baby dry. The longer baby can stay dry, the better.

Huggies’ Rapid-Dry™ Technology absorbs wetness instantly, reducing irritation risk.

🚫 Myth: Nappy rash creams are the only way to protect against irritation.
✅ Fact: A good nappy with a zinc enriched layer can also help to protect against irritation.
