A six-year-old boy has been hit and killed by a car as he was walking to catch the school bus with his siblings last week.

Caleb was walking on Bannockburn-Shelford Road with his two older siblings at 8am in Teesdale, Victoria, to catch their school bus into Geelong. Police say the little boy was struck by a car, causing fatal injuries.

“Following the collision CPR was performed by a couple of local residents, one being a nurse, and then paramedics arrived … unfortunately he died as a result of the collision,” Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy from the Major Collision Investigation Unit explained.

“The offending driver … was aware of the collision, has stopped, got out of the vehicle and we believe then got back into the vehicle and left the scene. That female is an 84-year-old local resident who is now in custody and assisting with our inquiries.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at Crime Stoppers.

  • How tragic for all involved.
I really think that older drivers need to be tested yearly. They need to have someone go out for half an hours driving test with them.
There are so many accidents where older drivers become confused and hit the wrong pedal, etc.
Imagine how that old lady feels.

  • This was a terrible tragedy and should never have happened. The two older siblings would be feeling such grief and also feel that somehow they helped this to happen. I do hope that proper counselling will be given to all who truly need it at this time of their life or else the two children will feel the blame of this tragedy for many a long time.

  • So sad to be taken so young and through no fault of his own. I wasn’t expecting the person to have hit him was an elderly woman, especially when she got out of her vehicle then got back in and drove off. My heart goes out to his family and especially his siblings who witnessed the distressing scene. RIP young man.

  • RIP beautiful boy. I cried reading this and seeing it on the news. My heart breaks for this family. I pray they find the strength to carry on in such hard times. And as for the driver, no words for such an act to drive away 😠

  • That is absolutely horrible! Kids should be safe to walk or ride a bike to school, it’s part of a right of passage. Being that the driver was 84, there is a good chance that she maybe was no longer fit to be driving. I know in NSW they have to go and resit driving tests, but not sure about VIC.

  • How absolutely dreadful Just heartbreaking. I can’t understand how someone could drive away but then shock and confusion can make us behave in ways we wouldn’t normally. I feel for the family but also for the wonderful people that rushed to help. The day will never leave them. Poor little man.

  • I can’t imagine the pain this family must be in. I am truly heartbroken for them. I am also in disbelief at the driver’s actions. At her age she might be charged but will she face prison? I doubt it, making this even more painful for the young boy’s family. There is such a sense of helplessness.

  • This is a heartbreaking tragedy for the family. I agree with many of the comments below about the needs for drivers to slow down vehicles. Greater care needs to be taken on roads. Driving is a huge responsibility and obeying road rules and all laws when on the road is essential.

  • Two children in my town were injured in very similar situations today. It’s just awful. They were right near their school. People need to be careful! I have seen even parents driving dangerously right after they pick their kids up – too fast, or looking at their phone, clearly unsafe behaviour.

  • I can’t stop thinking about this poor little boy and his family. What a tragic thing to happen to them. I don’t understand how anyone could leave the scene, if they were at fault or not. I really hope he wasn’t aware of being alone. It’s a tortuous thing to think about. I hope his family have so much love surrounding them right now

  • This is horrendous !! So the offending driver was aware of the collision, stopped and got out of her vehicle and just got back in her vehicle and left ?? What in the world !! Glad that she is now in custody and assisting inquiries, she should be charged when she is at fault.
My heart goes out to the family. Rest in peace precious boy

  • I cannot believe this woman was so cruel and heartless to stop and then carry on driving. Especially at her age, she should know better! Shame on her. Im glad they were able to find her and put her in custody for questioning. That poor boy definitely did not deserve it.

  • How very very awful. It sounds awful too that the driver left the scene, but perhaps she was in shock or thought she was going for help… I don’t want to judge yet. But no matter what, that’s a dreadful accident to happen. His poor siblings, and parents. It will be devastating.

  • Oh this is absolutely devastating. I can’t even imagine the grief this poor family must be feeling right now. Losing a child would honestly be the worst pain you could ever have to go through and the poor siblings seeing it happen. That’s something you’d never really get over 🙁 So, so sad..
