Look away now vegetarians, the latest first birthday photoshoot trend is all about babies chowing down on a big, juicy steak. And we’re here for it!

Move over cake smashes, parents are now going a far meatier route when it comes to mark their little one’s first trip around the sun.

@wildcardphotography01 Steak & Tator smash is how we do it around here! #steaksmash #steaklover #cakesmash #littlecowboy #cowboy #steakandpotatoes #tbonesteak #tbone #firstbirthdayphotoshoot #photoshoot #oklahomaphotographer #instantpotatoes #foodtok #lilbuckaroo #usdaprime #fyp #wildcardphotography ♬ Different ‘Round Here – Riley Green

While a cake smash photo session is all about giving bub a sweet treat to get messy with and create memories to mark their first birthday, steak smash shoots are all about unleashing their inner caveman and woman.

Super popular in the US (particularly for families who are beef producers), steak smash photoshoots usually have a bit of a cowboy or girl theme, or a farmyard, country feel.

And whether it’s a t-bone or eye fillet, the babies seem to LOVE gnawing on a big piece of steak to celebrate their first birthdays.

What do you think of steak smashes? Would you do one with your baby? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Yes, as a vegetarian I do look away for sure, it looks like a provovative act to me and the question is why ? Also some of the steaks in the pictures are still pinkish.
It’s generally recommended to avoid serving children undercooked meats, including medium rare steaks, due to the risk of foodborne illnesses. Cooking meat thoroughly helps reduce these risks.

  • This article was posted in Jan of 2023 and I have never heard of anyone I know doing one of these so im really not sure that they are the latest thing. I guess they were very short lived. Not something that I would have liked to do at all

  • Hahah omg my bub would love this for his first birthday next month! To encourage his solids journey we gave him steak to suck on at 6 months and he absolutely loved it. His first piece of meat as a scotch fillet, so he was set to be a steak lover.

    • LOL this is quite funny and quite creative. My daughter doesn’t like beef but what a great way to take a snap. This would be a cracker of a photo to show at those 21st parties hahaha. It is all about being creative with photos and this really has done it this time.

  • Oh wow, I’ve never heard or seen this trend – something different!

  • Umm it’s different for sure

  • I don’t find this attractive, but it’s another case of not my business if it suits other people.

  • I wish I thought of this! we had a bbq lunch in the park that would have been awesome.

  • The latest trend! Really!? I can’t see it taking off, I dont know anyone who’s had a steak smash for bubs 1st. My granddaughter will be 1 in October, she’s having a cake smash

  • Bring back the cakes I say. Just looks so strange eating steak.

  • I just don’t understand. It looks weird to see such a young child devouring such a huge piece of steak.

  • That just looks disturbing. No, I’m not vegetarian, but maybe stick with the cake smash…

  • Children will eat whatever they get their hands on in my opinion. Taking photos and videos for all the world to see isn’t my idea of being smart, personally. Once it’s there, it’s there for good.

  • Definitely not something I would have let my children try on their first birthday. They could choke on the sinew or cut their gums on the bone.

  • This sounds too funny! I won’t be doing it definitely as not all tends are meant to be followed by everyone

  • No I wouldn’t be doing this with my kids. I just can’t wrap my head around it.

  • What a healthy alternative to cake. I like it.

  • That is hilarious!! Never seen it before but i like it!! How fun and different

    • Once it’s a trend it’s not really ‘different’ anymore

    Reply

  • I’ve never heard of this before but those bubs are so cute!

  • Totally bizarre, let’s add a little caveman out fit and club too maybe a pet rat why not

    • Yep, I think it’s a bit bizarre too

    Reply

  • Oh no way to this just stick to the cake ones much cuter

    • Cakes can be colourful, creative and themed and appealing to the eye.
