I’ve always loved gardening and my husband has always been into keeping fish so it was pretty natural that the concept of Aquaponics appealed to us (aw how cute we joined our interests!) In terms of a small home garden set up ours is a neat little system that produces an abundant amount of herbs, garden greens & the odd tomato! We choose not to eat our fish stock, although the principal is that its a complete self sustaining system, the fish live below in a reservoir of water (obviously) that gets pumped out to water the plants growing above, this water then filters back down into the reservoir and is naturally filtered by the plants, the plants get their essential nutrients and are fertilized to produce strong healthy crops. Its a fun way to spice up your garden, it makes a great talking point when friends visit…oh and its nice to eat your very own organic herbs and vegetables! Just note that if this is something you are considering keep it kid safe! some local councils have pool fence regulations for any significant bodies of water!
