Hello!

At 30 I had my first child, a son. I was just getting used to being a Mum when we moved overseas to Auckland, New Zealand for a year – well that was the plan! I found out when my son was 3.5 months old that I was pregnant AGAIN, and we moved back home to our house here in Tassie and where my family all were. I must admit it was a shock, especially as their due dates were the same date – just 12 months apart! Luckily my son had been born a week early, and my daughter a week late ,so they ended up with 12 months and 2 weeks between them.

While I never felt totally “done” with having children, those blurred years with two babies and then two toddlers, then two at school passed very quickly, and it wasn’t until I turned 40 that I realised that I really would like another. After a miscarriage I thought my chances were over, but found I was pregnant again soon later and gave birth to my 3rd child – a son, just days before my 42nd birthday.

Today, at 44 with an energetic 2 year old and two in high school, I’m busy, but you know what, I am LOVING it. The “baby” has given our family a “new lease of life” and none of us know what we ever did without him.

I believe there is no “perfect age” between children. There are pros and cons with the small gap and the big gap that I had, but you make the best of what you get, and what is right for YOU! Many will think I’m “too old” and that’s OK, it’s a personal thing and I’m happy and so are my kids, and just quietly, I plan to be around for a LONG time yet ;)

  • Only as old as you feel, for sure. Unfortunately, I feel about 65 most days :/ Old before my time I get so tired

  • Lovely story, there is never a right age for having children, Circumstances beyond our control often dictate when you have children.

My little sister is 1 year 1 week and 1 day younger than me…. we are really close. we begged mum for a little brother when we were teens; look back I understand that she had a hysterectomy.

  • You have put it perfectly. I was 24 with my first then last year at 31 had my 2nd. I had a miscarriage in March & would love to be pregnant again anytime (sooner rather than later). While our age gap has worked well, for me wanting another bub I wouldn’t wait so long again but saying that we are in a far better position now than back then. People are so judgemental whether your a younger mum or an older mum which is a shame, would be nice if others would just mind their own business & be happy for mums. So great to read your loving your family situation & 44 is not old either :)

  • Thanks for sharing your story and the inspiration that its ok to be a older mum. I had first at 34 and second at 36 and have now been thinking maybe next year would love to try for a third and final one.
