Getting called into the school to attend a meeting makes parents feel embarrassed. I remember what it was like for me as a child and getting my parents called in. Not many as I was too scared to do that. Reentry meetings is the hardest. Got at least two or three education workers at the meeting. Us and them. Embarrassing moments when they start writing down what’s said at the meeting too. Having an advocate being there helps it go more smoothly for all

  • I only ever had to attend the usual parent teacher meetings at the end of each term, no dramas with my children. I was alarmed during one visit when the teacher told us of a story my son shared about ‘dad dragging me round the house, on my knees, in hand cuffs.’ He showed his carpet burn on his knees. We were horrified, it was honestly only playing :( But then the teacher said “it’s ok, I always tell parents I promise to believe only half of what your kids tell me happens at home if you promise to believe half of what your child tells you happens at school.” This scared me a bit, I thought “What does he have to hide?”

    • lol yeah kids sort of cut out the beginning and middle of stories and can leave a listener confused!

lol my mum said that my daughter was saying “mummy b*tch” over and over!. i asked my little child to elaborate and she was saying “mummy beach” and we lived next to the beach lol

oh and i just remembered another one. my daughter was saying “get the baskard” lol but she was trying to say “get the basket”

my mil thinks that our kid swears when he says “rock it!” while playing with his guitar. She is adammant that he is swearing but i know what MY kid is saying.

  • It would be hard but if this happens see if you can take a friend, not for them to do any talking unless necessary if the others are not getting your points, but so you have support as well as someone to remind you what is said. Its hard to think if you are emothional – who wouldnt be with that many people in the room.

    • I totally agree it is hard to think and process information when you are emotional, as anyone would be. An advocate or taking some dot point notes would be handy

      • Thankyou. I love education but there’s times when everyone needs support in one way

  • Meetings can be productive if they result in an outcome.
