Toddler In Coma After Inhaling Baking Product - Mouths of Mums

A Gold Coast toddler is continuing to recover, after he inhaled a common cake decorating product while his mum was making a birthday cake, resulting in him being placed in an induced coma for several days.

Fourteen-month-old Dusty Wildman was playing beside his mum, professional baker Katie Robinson, as she prepared a Bluey cake for her friend Rochelle, when he managed to grab some gold dust powder.

The powder, commonly used in cake decorating, turns into a paste when mixed with water. Rochelle said that when Dusty inhaled it, it quickly blocked his lungs. The powder has now been recalled across Australia.

“One minute I’m baking and the next I am trying to keep my baby conscious,” mum Katie told the Courier Mail.

The toddler was unresponsive and was rushed to hospital. Dusty has had surgery to clear his lungs, but is in an induced coma.

Katie told The Courier Mail that she now realises the decorating powder contains copper, and says it’s too dangerous to be sold as a cake decoration.

“It was so quick. He was just playing around like he usually does when he suddenly got his hands on the dust,” she said.

“It really should never be marketed as a baking product and shouldn’t be in anyone’s kitchen – I had no idea it could be so dangerous. It should definitely be labelled as toxic.”

A fundraiser has been started by Rochelle, with Katie and her partner Chris both self-employed and unable to work while they’re by Dusty’s hospital bed.

“This has turned our lives upside down as the doctors say it is a watch and wait situation.”

Dusty is thankfully now recovering but doctors have warned he could still have long term impacts.

  • It scares me to think that someone out there designed this product without thinking of safety and the possible repercussions. It is a baking product and so is being eaten. Yes, quantities are small but it’s still feeding people a toxin. It’s just as well they were able to save this poor little boy.

  • It was this week on the news too that this product is being recalled. I still can’t believe why it was produces in the first place and past the safety tests before it was put on the market. I absolutely hope and pray that Dusty continues to recover and send blessings to this family.

  • I was so happy to see these products are being recalled, and that Dusty is doing better. It seems he still has some recovery ahead of him, but any positive news is wonderful to read. I absolutely hate that us parents have to learn through the heartbreak of other families to know what is harmful for our kids.

  • Far out such a heart-breaking scenario and watching the parents speak to the media makes me tear up as I can not even imagine how they are feeling! Things can go pear shaped in a matter of seconds even when you watch your kids as much as you possibly can, what has happened is unimaginable and a true nightmare for these parents. I feel so sad for them to be experiencing this! We all need to be praying for this little boy’s fully recovery. Sending so much love to this family x

  • Oh my goodness, what a sad story and so scary for this family. I had no idea about this either. It really goes to show you, how important it is to check out every ingredient on packets so you know what is in your house. I hope this little boy is going to be ok.

  • What a story !! This must turn your life up side down for sure ! And dealing with the uncertainty whilst watching and waiting must be near unbearable ! Praying for wisdom for the treatment team and for the toddler to pull through ! I wonder why in the world this baking product is on the market, who produces it and why in the world would you produce something that is dangerous !

  • Oh goodness, this is such a terrible freak accident. I would have never thought a situation like this could happen from decorative baking powder! And I had absolutely no clue it contained copper. Why in the world is it widely available? I really hope little Dusty makes it out of the hospital perfectly. Thinking about this family
