Hello!

They’re bigger, keep fresh for longer and soon you’ll be able to get your hands on your very own tree. Get excited Australian avo lovers, the giant Jala avocado is here!

It’s been a 30 year journey, but now Aussie gardeners will be able to try their hand at growing these larger-than-life avocados in their own backyards.

The variety is credited to 81-year-old Queensland gardener Lorna Spackman. Her late husband Ken saved a seed from an avocado of unknown origins, before clearing paddocks on their farm at Palmwoods.

He then grew a tree from that seed before he died. And now his legacy lives on.

“Some more seedlings grew under that, and one tree produced extra special fruit, which I gave to my neighbour to try and he absolutely loved it,” Lorna told the ABC.

Jala avocados are not only larger, but are slow-oxidising. The trees grow up to 10 metres tall, and are famed for their great yield of fruit.

The first release of 1000 trees has already snapped up by a national hardware chain. A second release is expected late this year, according to wholesaler Flemings Nurseries, which has been growing the trees.

More of the trees were planted, and the large fruit was sold at the Brisbane Markets. Jala avocados, which weight between 1 – 1.2kg each, on average, are sold in some Queensland fruit and veg shops, including Produce Art.

But soon, more Aussies will be able to get their (two) hands on them, by growing their own.

  • An avocado tree would be amazing! My kids love avocado!

  • OMG I would love a tree for sure. If I had my way I would eat a avocado every day of the week. Actually sometimes I do just that.

    • Me too, I eat avocado every day

  • I haven’t seen them around yet, I should have a look at the fruit market this week

  • Just wish I had the room to grow one of these trees. I have eaten one of them and its size was 1.5kg. It lasted a week without any oxidisation, and I just had some on my toast a couple of times a day. It was so creamy as well.
As far as growing them in Victoria, I have a friend who had 3 trees in a Melbourne back yard and another who has 4 much bigger trees in the Dandenong ranges – couldn’t get too much colder than that.

    • Wow, that it stayed well that long, that’s amazing !

  • These look amazing. I love avocado and want a tree. Not sure how well it would in Melbourne.

  • These look great if they actually keep for longer. Interesting to see how long they are fresh after being cut open. I only use half a normal size one at a time.

  • Love avocado and they’re so good for you but unless we were having a party the smaller size are probably better for us..

  • omg great idea! i want one

  • I absolutely need this. I buy multiple avos each week. I want one of these.

  • Omg I need one of these in my life. We’ve planted 16 fruit trees about 6 months ago in a small yard and they are all in flower… but I don’t have an avo tree, nut will as soon as they are released. Thank you! Eeeeek

  • I can see times when a big avocado would be really useful – like making dip for parties.

  • Not sure how successful these will be. As they’re over a kilogram each and we buy per kilo, I’m expecting they’ll be really expensive

  • I’m already growing an avocado tree. Not sure I’d get a second one.

  • I love avocado. Lets hope these have a great taste.

  • They are definitely big and very creamy!

  • Love me some avocado but that’s impressively huge. I don’t think one person could finish it in one go.

  • That’s so crazy!! Ive never seen them so big

    Reply

  • That’s interesting – I’m sure there’s a market for both the avocados and the trees.

  • You would need quite a big spacious garden to grow these yourself

    Reply

  • Oh man, those are massive !

    • Although I LOVE avocado, I don’t think I would be able to eat such a large one (unless I would eat it over several days)
