A Queensland hospital has put out an urgent call for donations of ‘cuddle hearts’ to help premature babies and their mums.

The NICU at Mater Mothers’ Hospital in South Brisbane needs to restock its unique fabric hearts, which are used to bring comfort to premmie babies, and help breastfeeding mums.

They’re nothing more than two pieces of soft cotton of flannelette sewn together, but to the families of premature babies, they’re a little lifeline.

“One fabric heart is given to the mother and placed on her chest to pick up her scent, with the other
heart placed close to the baby for the same reason,” Mater Neonatal Critical Care Unit Education Coordinator Julia Maguire explained.

“The hearts are then swapped so mother and baby are left with each other’s scented heart. The little cuddle hearts help a mother’s milk come in when she is apart from her baby, while the scent
of the mother also has a calming effect on the baby.”

They’re a special link between mum and bub, at a time when the two often can’t be together.

Mum Melissa McCallum, who gave birth to her son Riley eight weeks early in January, said the hearts a a simple way to ‘help a family stay connected’.

“I had issues with my placenta and Riley basically evicted himself.

“Having a premature baby in hospital can be a roller coaster of emotions, but these cuddles hearts are
so special.”

The hospital is welcoming donations of cuddle hearts, however volunteers need to following these strict sewing instructions for safety reasons. So dust off that sewing machine!

  • What a beautiful and simple idea. I do wish I’d been offered something similar when in hospital with a premmie baby. It would have made me feel much better, and been a lovely memento to bring home with us (I assume they get to keep them? You wouldn’t re-use them, surely).

  • I have seen so many people sharing this on Facebook and it is so beautiful to see how many people are wanting to help in any way they can. Even for those that cannot sew or afford to contribute just being aware, sharing online or via word of mouth is so important. This is such a beautiful thing and definitely something I will be contributing towards personally and with my future small business.

  • These are so sweet and a wonderful idea. Unfortunately I’m not a sewer (as much as I’ve tried) Pretty sure i should have just listened to my year 12 textiles teacher who may have said there really was no hope but I’m sure there are some wonderful people out there who will be able to make these gorgeous hearts.

  • What a wonderful idea but unfortunately I have no way of buying any material. I really wish I could help but I’m not very good at sewing either. My heart goes out to the families who have prem babies. It’s good to know that just the scent of Mother and Baby helps to calm baby and bring on Mum’s milk.

  • That is such a beautiful and lovely initiative! I wish I could sew, but I guess even if you can’t sew that well, most people could make one of these pretty easily. I think it’s such a great idea and a great way to help families bond and through what must be an excruciatingly hard time.

  • I have been discussing this article with friends and family and particularly with those that love to sew. I have lots of lovely fabric leftover from projects and will happily share it with them. This project is such a worthwhile and feel good project to be involved with for the greater good of the community.

  • What a fabulous idea, I love this initiative and what it represents. I wish I was good at crafting and I would happily donate my time to making some of these but unfortunately I can’t sow or craft. What a fantastic cause, I hope they get lots of donations to support their cause.

  • I would like to give this a go. I have a few crafty friends that I will get involved as well. I’m sure they could do with as many of these hearts as possible. Great project and lovely to think we can do something to help those who are doing it tough.

  • This is such a lovely idea. I didn’t understand at all until I read that. I hope they get lots of volunteers making them to boost the supply. I am sure they will. I am sure there are lot’s of sewers out there with leftovers offcuts that would be perfect to use up for this purpose

  • What a lovely idea. It’s not a hard thing to do and gives so much back to mum and baby. I hope they receive lots of heart donations. Local hospitals might like the idea as well. If it gives them a connection and comfort I think it is a great project.

  • I love love love these!!! It also helps bring awareness of bonding and I wish more hospitals prioritised the skin on skin contact straight after birth. When this isn’t possible, what a creative, special and beautiful way to assist. And a special keepsake! There not enough understanding of the importance of breastfeeding and connection for mum and bubs wellbeing.

  • That’s a lovely idea.
My firstborn was pre too and had a birth weight of 880 grams.
I’m in Brisbane and happy to sew these. I would also be happy to help those who feel they can’t sew, as this is really not hard. I miss a contact number or link to a site to sign up for this. It would be good when this was provided in this article.

  • What a beautiful idea which obviously works or the hospital wouldn’t be sending out an SOS for more to be made. I do hope that many more hearts have been made and are now at the hospital awaiting being given out to those in need since the call went out to those who can help. Bravo.
