The COVID-19 panic buying is pretty much over. Toilet paper is back in business and we don’t have to prepare for a punch up every time we hit the supermarket. BUT things are certainly NOT back to normal. You just have to take a glance over the empty Kmart shelves to see that all is not right in retail.

I recently had a full-on tantrum about the gaping empty Kmart shelves where my elusive sausage roll maker should be sitting just waiting to come home to its reserved spot in my kitchen, squeeeezing between the pie maker and the air fryer (all Kmart of course). I suggested it’s all one big conspiracy and that it was just a way for the Kmart power-heads to taunt us and make us covet the Kmart goodies even more than we do now.

But looking around my Kmart, clocking all the big wide empty gaps, I’m beginning to think my theory was wrong. It may be good business sense to limit the supply of one in-demand item….but not half the store. That would just be plain old silly.

Kmart shoppers are NOT happy!

Kmart fans have been all over social media moaning about the empty Kmart shelves. Some say their local discount outlet is a ‘ghost town’, with others complaining that shelves have been vacant for weeks.

It seems though the REAL reason behind the non-existant stock is pretty boring and a bit of a cop-out really. Apparently, Kmart is having hassles with keeping up with shopper demand.

“We’re experiencing unusually high demand for some of our product categories both instore and online,” Kmart said in an official statement.

Not Impressed About The Empty Kmart Shelves!

Hmmmm…not impressed. When there was a run on loo paper, Woolworths and Coles pulled out all stops to increase supply in a big way. The CEOs of these major brands would send emails every day explaining what they are doing to counteract the frantic panic buying. And it’s all action stations go!

But Coronavirus has been around for months now and I just think Kmart buyers and stock people should have had enough time and insight to increase supply levels of popular items and keep their shelves full.

And yes, we know there have been issues with products coming from China. But we know that deliveries are coming through now so it’s not a good enough excuse anymore.

We’ll Have To Wait TWO Months!

The discount retailer admitted that stock levels will not return to normal until late July.

“We expect stock availability to improve soon and to normalise by late July. We appreciate your patience as our teams work hard to deliver the products you need, at the time you need them most.”

I Don’t Want To Wait!

No Kmart, you should not appreciate my patience. Because I.am.NOT.patient. You are a massive wealthy corporation. You should have an abundance of super-clever planning and contingency people working in your head office. I am tired of waiting!

Comments from other disgruntled shoppers have been flying thick and fast:

“You would think they are closing. Aisles on both sides of same row, [row] after row empty. Don’t bother shopping for months.”

“I went for an egg flip over the weekend and I was shocked to see the shelves empty! There was nothing on the shelves, especially the cooking utensils.”

“I went to Kmart today and the shelves were literally EMPTY. A few serving boards left. Virtually no crockery, plastic ware … row after row were just empty.”

“Went to my local Kmart on Saturday and the whole place was almost empty!! It’s an absolute joke,” another unhappy shopper said.

It’s Not The Workers’ Fault

Of course, there are always those fervent Kmart supporters that will stand by the brand despite their incompetence. But most of the comments of support were actually directed to the poor staff, who get the brunt of the abuse.

“Give the poor workers a break guys. They can only just keep up to the demands, COVID has put such pressure on everything,” said one sympathetic commenter.

I am not saying for one minute that this is the floor staff’s fault and unfortunately they are the ones that cop it most of the time. Those supposedly clever Kmart clogs that sit in their ivory tower somewhere don’t get a harsh word, it all gets directed at the innocent staff.

“I am a sales rep and go into lots of Kmart stores regularly and hear people going off at the staff! Leave them alone!”

Absolutely! Find the email of the Kmart MD (his name is Ian Bailey) and email him instead!

  • Coat hangers! I haven’t been able to get my normal coat hangers for months, even before covid they were low or out

  • It all comes China and the COVID-19 crisis has made shipping delayed simple as that

  • I haven’t been to Kmart in a while. I ordered online for my little one’s birthday in April. I didn’t really mind if things weren’t in stock, as I just ordered something else.

  • I tried to buy things online as live in the country and it is easier for me and most of what I wanted was out of stock I think there was one item I could get so left it for a week as not worth paying for delivery when if they had everything I wanted I would of had free delivery. So just over a week and again out of stock gets me blaming the virus doesn’t make sense that people would of gone mad buying a food processor and a dog thing I wanted doesn’t ad up why they ran out of, so think we are getting stung a tale. So I haven’t bothered with trying again to buy so they have missed out on a sale oh electric blanket was another thing I added the last time and again was out of stock.

  • It’s understandable. I haven’t been recently as my closest store is a fair distance to drive.

  • This article is a perfect example of first world problems. With everything else happening an empty Kmart shelf is not significant at all.

  • With all that is going on in the world, empty shelves at Kmart doesnt rate. This article is way over the top. All of their stuff is imported so it is easy to see why there will be delays. Wait it out and move on…or buy from somewhere else.

  • No I haven’t noticed it and have been able to buy the items I was after.
This article is a bit too much moaning for me. It’s nothing compared to Africa, we’re just rather spoiled.

  • I noticed it was empty because I broke my grater and needed a new one. The whole kitchen section was basically empty. I just went to Woolworths and bought one there. My biggest disappointment is they have no puzzles and their puzzles are much cheaper than anywhere else.

  • I haven’t been there recently.

  • Yeah it’s pretty crap in Launceston. It can suck here at the best of times with running out of sheet sizes or shoe sizes, etc and staff having a very uncaring attitude of ‘I don’t know’ with regard to stock coming back in. Now it’s 10 times worse. There’s very limited stock in the craft aisle.

  • If people have been complaining for weeks about empty Kmart shelves then it appears there have been a lot of people out and about when we’ve been told to only be out shopping for ‘basic necessities’.. The other thing about empty shelves is that people on JobSeeker as well as some other payments have been receiving an extra $550.00 a fortnight on top of their normal payment. The point was for people to spend that money, helping the economy, the same as those who have received the first $750.00 stimulus lump sum — looks like it’s working ok..

  • We’re people really buying all these cutlery etc during this lockdown?!

  • A new store opened up locally, we thought we would check it out, being a new store you would think the store would be well stocked… nope, was practically empty :/

  • Times have changed. We can all wait, or go elsewhere.

    • Exactly! The days of over abundance and having everything immediately have changed. I have waited for products and am still waiting on delivery of products from other stores and that is ok. There are bigger issues!

  • My Kmart isn’t that bad, but they are still bare in some areas in store. I went in yesterday to buy a new water bottle for my child but all they had were large plastic ones, which would be too heavy when 1/2 full, over priced aluminium ones that either dent, warp or leak when dropped or glass! But having said that it was the same in the reject shop, although their plastic water bottles were only around 350ml which also isn’t suitable!

I do look forward to there being items in stock when I go in store.
