A mum is raising awareness about the dangers of tiny ‘toys’ that have resulted in her baby being fitted with a stoma and losing part of her bowel.

The mum shared her story on Facebook to warn other parents who may not realise the dangers posed by tiny sculpting balls.

She says what doctors initially thought was a bout of gastro, turned out to be something far more sinister.

“My beautiful baby Araya fell ill on Friday the 21st of February, after being treated for three days in general hospital for gastroenteritis and even a brief discharge (we only made it to the car then she was vomiting again we went straight back to the ward).

“That Sunday she started to vomit diarrhoea and blood, an X-ray shown 5 beads/ balls stuck in her small intestine. I immediately realised they was my eldest daughter’s magnetic balls that she had brought home from school. (They are not something I would have brought or had in my home simply because Araya eats everything crawling around atm!)

“We then had an urgent transfer to a more experienced hospital early hours Monday where she had surgery in the morning. They removed all of the magnetics, 6 in total.”

The mum explained that five of the tiny magnets were so far in Araya’s small intestine, with one pinching part of her bowel, that it cause part of her bowel to die and created a hole in another part.

“She had to have this part of her bowel removed she now has a stoma bag… reservable in a few months time hopefully!

“She’s contracted MRSA, a chest infection, her stoma output is considerably more than her intake she is still a very poorly baby.”

The mum says she’s not looking for pity or sympathy, but rather to raise awareness.

“I didn’t even know she had ingested them and I have enough guilt without anyone pointing out the obvious. Had I known none of this would have been no where near as severe as what it’s been.

“The surgeon told me baby girl has been extremely lucky I just worry that about a child/family won’t be and if I can help prevent someone else going through what we have in the last week then I will do my best.

“Please, please throw these in the bin if you have them. They are extremely dangerous and the strongest type of magnet, the surgeon could not even unfuse them from being stuck together!”

  • Such scary stuff ! The eldest sister who had brought these magnetic balls home from school must feel pretty bad too, poor thing ! You could wonder why these magnetic balls are even produced when they can lead to such dangerous scenario’s ! I hope the stoma bag has been reversed by now !

  • Oh dear im sure your elder child felt very guilty but its a massive lesson for her regarding being responsibile and cleaning up afterself. Hopefully lesson learnt.
I agree with the poster below that its sad the hosptial waited so long before doing an xray and discovering the reason she was so ill.

  • This makes me angry. First at the makers of these silly toys and secondly at the hospital for waiting 3 days before deciding to do an x-ray. They could have averted all of the unnecessary pain and anguish for the child and parents by doing the x-ray by the second day. I hope Araya makes a full recovery.

  • Oh man this is so scary !! I really hope and pray the stoma bag is reversable in a couple of months time ! It goes to show how careful and diligent we must be with tiny things like this around young kids. And in sometimes we need to be careful for longer as some kids are oral for longer

  • That is absolutely horrific and my heart goes out to this family. You just don’t know what toys could be potentially dangerous to kids. Some kids will literally put anything in their mouths and as parents we just need to be hypervigilant. They need to have more warnings on toys to ensure things like this can be avoided.

  • This is a very scary and sad story and a big big reminder that we need to be so careful with toys around young kids. This poor family and kid, I feel for them and this little girl who has lost some of her bowel at such a young age. It really is a timely reminder.

  • This is so sad, and a reason why I’m the over protective mum to my toddler when people try to give him random toys. It’s so great to read that this little girl is doing better and they were able to act on it quickly. Good on this mum for spreading awareness

  • What a terrible thing to have gone through for all of you. Your baby nearly dying, your older child feeling guilty because she brought the magnet toy home and the distress you have been going through. So many of us squeak through things similar to this happening to our child with no aftereffects and not realising how close we had come to an outcome like yours. Don’t feel guilty – we are all busy and it can happen to anyone especially if you don’t know the item has been brought into your house.

  • The response below is for BellaB about her comment about Lego. Unfortunately the response did not attach to her comment.

  • Lego along with other toys can indeed be tricky to keep all in one place; we ended up purchasing a big container for all of the Lego. We also had a designated area for playing with Lego. Keeping the Lego in a container and having a designated area stopped any of those rogue Lego pieces that drop to the floor and can be trod on!

  • I understand that you may feel guilty about your little girl but, rest assured, the only person to blame is the person who invented it and the company who built it. All little ones whether crawling or just walking will pick up something from the floor and put it in their mouths. My boys are now adults but I can still remember them doing the same. I hope your daughter is much better soon and back home where she belongs with you

  • That’s just so horrible! More safety checks need to be done before some of these ‘toys’ go on the market. I realise there are age limits, but even my 9yr old tends to put things in his mouth. It wouldn’t take much to accidentally swallow. I hope this little girl makes a fast recovery.

  • The poor child; such an awful ordeal for the child and the family. Small toys can indeed be a hazard and even when vigilant accidents can happen. Children do explore and have a natural curiosity about everything in their environment and around them. Good on this mum for raising awareness.

  • mom489452, although that’s a good theory, it’s much harder to manage once you have older kids and babies. Lego was the bane of my existence; my older kids loved it, and people gave it to them constantly, but of course it was dangerous for the baby. I worked hard to keep it away from the smaller ones, but I sympathise with this sort of accident.

That’s a bit harsh and damning as a comment. The mother said her older daughter had brought them home from school unbeknownst to her, and inferring the parents are dumb is pretty insensitive, the poor family has been through enough without comments like that.

  • This is so scary and terrifying for that family. Small toys were always a big concern for me when my daughter was small, it was something i never allowed in my house as it was always on my mind. This baby was indeed very very lucky on this occasion and this is a great reminder to anyone who has small children to be extra vigilant.

  • How dangerous small toys could be? I have two kids but I never thought it could be that dangerous. Its a big lesson for all parents. We should learn from this incident. Hope Araya gets better soon. Lots of best wishes for family.

  • This is absolutely terrifying. It can be easy keeping risky toys away from littles when they are the only ones in the house, but must be much harder when older siblings want certain toys. What an ordeal for such a tiny girl, really hoping that she’ll be okay from here on
