The devastated parents of a one-year-old who died after being left in a hot car in Sydney say she was the ‘light of their lives’.

Olivia, who turned one in December, was found unresponsive in a car outside of a daycare centre just after 5.30pm on Tuesday. It’s understood her father, Etienne Ancelet had gone to the childcare centre to pick up Olivia, but was told she wasn’t dropped off that morning.

It was then he discovered his daughter still in the back of the car. While neighbours attempted CPR and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended, the little girl was declared dead at the scene. Temperatures reached above 30C in Sydney on Tuesday.

Etienne and Olivia’s mum Kim Visconti have told news.com.au they are trying to come to terms with the horrific loss.

“Olivia was a sweet and beautiful baby, who was the light of our lives.

“We are humbled and grateful for the time we had her. We are devastated by what has unfolded.

“We do not wish this on any parent.

“We will always cherish our time with our beautiful girl. She was loved by all that knew her. It is an unimaginable time of sorrow for us.”

Investigations into the tragedy are continuing.

  • Just horrible. I dont know how a parent would cope with this type of loss and guilt moving forward. Such a horrible tragedy.
I once read that when you put your child in their seat you should take off a shoe and put that on the seat next to them so when you reach your destination you need to get your shoe which reminds you of the child.

  • this is such a tragedy. It’s both unimaginable and quite easy to do, but the consequences are so awful. I feel for the parents.

  • It is sad this is happening too often, which also means these parents are not alone.
Parents or caregivers may forget the child is in the car due to distractions, changes in routine, tiredness or stress.
In 2024, 39 deaths have been reported here in Australia due to children being left in the car. On average, 37 children under the age of 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle. Nearly every state has experienced at least one death since 1998. In both 2018 and 2019 a record number of 53 children died after being left in a hot vehicle.

  • This is very very devastating but how on earth did no one notice the child in the back seat during the day? How come the daycare didn’t call to check in after a certain timeframe? I would be interested to see the report once the police has investigated this. This poor family, my thoughts are with them during this very sad time.

  • Such a tragedy to have happened to their little girl. The one downfall of having your little one in the back of your car is not being able to see them clearly. My youngest is 42 and I still glance in the back of the vehicle to make sure I’ve left nothing behind. My deepest sympathy to them both on their loss.

  • I can’t imagine how awful that would be and I feel for them with all the negative comments. It is an awful mistake to make but with busy lives and thinking of a million things to do it can happen. I have sometimes been driving somewhere and automatically turned in to the centre that I worked at as I was going past. I feel for them enormously.

  • RIP little Olivia. How heart wrenching this must be for all concerned with this tragedy that happens too often due to not putting into place a routine whereby before leaving the car – no matter where the seats are all checked for possible passengers and even the floor if there is a family pet. Everyone is so busy rushing around and trying to do everything including all their social media output that we all often forget simple things.

  • This is beyond devastating and my heart breaks for this little angels family. I can not imagine what they must be going through at this time but I do know it must be the worst pain imaginable. I really hope they can somehow find some peace after such a horrible tragedy.

  • That would be the most horrible thing in the world. As parents of a young child, it’s likely that they were simply so exhausted they thought they had dropped her at daycare and simply gone to work instead, forgetting she was in the car. I have heard a similar story a number of years ago. You would never forgive yourself after something like that :(.

  • This story just absolutely broke my heart. I can’t imagine how this dad feels or how he will ever be able to forgive himself. Unfortunately tiredness and changes to routine could have led to this, I don’t know, but either way my heart goes out to the parents and the family of sweet baby Olivia

My only hope is that this doesn’t ever happen to anyone else ever again. This is such a tragedy that could happen to anyone if they get distracted or are out of their normal routine day.

It’s hard to understand that the parents forgot the drop her off and left her in the car all day.
I can’t begin to imagine how awful and probably guilty they must feel !
We receive a text when our kids don’t arrive at school, this should be common practice at child car centre’s too

  • This is so very sad but unfortunately not the first time I have heard of a child being accidentally left and forgotten in the car. With such hot temperatures the poor little girl had no chance. This is something the parents will never recover from. I feel sorry for the whole family as it’s not done on purpose.

  • My heart goes out to this beautiful bubs family. I can’t even begin to imagine how I could walk another day if I were in his shoes. No one wants to be in this situation, and asking how you can forget your child isn’t helpful. It happens far more often than anyone would like. Technology is at a point that there should be alarms that sound. My fridge beeps if the door is left open, why can’t cars do the same when weight is left on seats.
