Wrong Baby Taken Home From Maternity Hospital

A hospital has launched an investigation after a family went home from the maternity ward with the wrong baby.

The Medical Centre in Podgorica, Montenegro, blamed the incident on a nurse who it said did not follow procedure, reports 9 news.

A statement said doctors and nurses who were on duty at the time have been replaced and are facing disciplinary measures.

The hospital said “we would like to assure the public that all those responsible will be sanctioned”.

Reports claim the couple left the hospital thinking they were taking home their own baby girl when the father realised something was wrong.

The couple went back after finding that the number tags of the mother and the baby did not match, the report added.

Because of the possibility of this happening, my newborns were never left unattended nor left in the care of hospital staff

How the heck can this happen. I know it’s not always easy to notice the differences in a new born but the tags between Mother and baby are meant to match. Thank goodness it was noticed immediately by the parents. Doesn’t say too much about the staff though

Thank God for the best outcome. However, this would be very parent’s nightmare and should never happen. The distress that would have been caused, is unforgivable.

I think this is a big part of the reason babies stay in the room with their Mum’s instead of going to the nursery now.

Phew what an error ! This should not have happened ! Lucky they didn’t throw the number tags away yet and could prove this mistake.

They must have been half asleep, surely you can recognize your own baby.Very strange this can happen in this day and age.

  Possibly not – it does depend on the type of birth and time spent with the new bub and the health of the mum. These things do happen – poor families.
