paper mache space helmet

This is a great homemade space helmet it looks lovley and is quite robust and once you have finished you can paint it.

Material

1 newspaper
3-4 cups paper mache glue
1 balloon
1 bottle coloured paint

Method

First blow up the balloon to fit childs head.
then tear newspaper into segments/strips.
apply a layer of glue on the balloon and then a layer of newspaper and continue this process until you are happy with the thickness of your paper mache helmet. Allow this to dry in the sun for a day.
Once dry cut out a neck hole and a window for the face making sure everything is in proportion simple allow extra room for either another layer of paper mache around the cut edges or you can sand paper the edges to not be sharp.

then paint.

So going to do this with my boys over the weekend and see if my girls want to do this or something a bit different 🙂 seeming as my boy calls himself Captain Australia

How much fun this would be to make with my son he would have an absolute ball. We would definately paint or decorate with paint after paper mache is complete.

this is a fun activity and can be very messy but the kids will be occupied with it for awhile. You can also take a few days to complete it, just take 30 min intervals because sometimes the kids get bored really quickly.

We used to soak news paper in wall paper glue and then apply the soaked strokes of news paper on the balloon. Wall paper is quite cheep and easy to get at your hardware store.
