The prince and princess of baby names have been crowned, and it seems Aussie parents are creatures of habit. The top two baby names for Australia in 2025 are very familiar – they’ve both featured as the nation’s most popular baby names for several years.

But there are some movers and shakers that have made an appearance.

Once again, Oliver has topped the list for boys – taking the crown as the most popular boy name for the 12th consecutive year. For the girls, Charlotte is back on top, after being ousted from the number one position in 2024 by Isla. Charlotte has been Australia’s most popular girl name for 10 out of the last 15 years.

Every year Australia’s states and territories release the names of every baby born in the nation, and McCrindle analyses the data to reveal baby naming trends and insights.

Let’s take a look at what we named our babies in the past year.

Australia’s Most Popular Baby Names 2025

Both the boy and girl top ten baby names have remained fairly consistent, however this year Lily and Ava have dropped out of the top 10, with Sophie and Grace taking their places.

Baby Name Movers And Shakers

Last year marked the end of Generation Alpha babies (born between 2010-2024), so McCrindle has been able to look at the baby name data across the entire generation. Unsurprisingly, Oliver and Charlotte were the top names of the generation.

Other names have rocketed to popularity among Generation Alpha babies, including Theodore and Hazel. These have been joined by other popular Gen Alpha names: Arthur, Arlo, Muhammad, Harvey, Hudson, Archer and Austin for boys, and Luna, Maeve, Florence, Aria, Billie, Millie, Elsie, Daisy, Eleanor, Mila, Evelyn, Harper and Ellie, for girls.

  • It is so good to see that all of the names for this year are nice normal, beautiful names. A lot of them are more old fashioned names making a come back which is great, because some of the older names are absolutely gorgeous. There is nothing worse than seeing kids with weird names that no one can spell!

  • I like the names on the list and would choose a name based on what my husband and I like rather than what is popular.

  • I prefer to pick a name that means something to me, whether it’s after a family member or just one I feel suits my child. Out of my sons, granddaughters, grandson and great grandsons only 2 can be shortened. I don’t care so long as I can pronounce their names and they like them, that’s all that matters. I love them all no matter what they get called

  • Like others here I selected names that were not popular at the time.
My eldests name can be shortened and the shortened version has become popular. My middles daughters name became popular after she was named even though at the time I had only met two people with that name. The youngest has a very uncommon name that suits her to a tee.

  • I actually think it is a good thing to go against what is popular and do your own thing. When it came to choosing names we went with the same belief, not going with what was popular at the time and very much choosing names that fitted each child perfectly.

  • My daughter’s name is in the top trending list of names. When I chose it, it was uncommon and that is what I loved about it. Now I am hearing people call their daughters this name a lot. I did choose to spell it differently though as I wanted it to be unique and I am so glad I did this.

  • I’m actually very pleased that my kids’ names are well down the top 100. One of our goals was to give them names which weren’t so common that there’d be six others in their class, but not so unusual that they’d spend their lives spelling them for people or explaining the pronunciation.

  • While i love a lot of the names on these lists we tried to choose more uncommon names for our kids. Nothing crazy, just so there wouldn’t be three of them in the same class. . Only my sons name made the top hundred. Although two of my daughters middle names and one of their shortened names is also on the list.

  • We waited until the birth of each child and then took a good look at them and named them. Each name is a perfect fit for them and their individual personality. The names of our children are not on any of the lists and that is a good thing; never any confusion in class or other places.

  • Such beautiful names! I remember having such a hard time choosing the right ones for my girls as it was something i never wanted to regret in the future. I absolutely love their names now and wouldnt change it for the world. Definitely take the time to think about it and not just follow trends

  • My granddaughter just had a baby boy at the end of March and they still haven’t got a name for the little one. His big sister is calling him “Little Man” and “Little Brother” So I will send this list to them and they might find a name that they like.
