Olivia has claimed the title of most popular girls’ baby name in Australia, putting it in the company of its male equivalent Oliver.

The girls name deriving from ‘olive’ has climbed two spots to number one in BabyCenter’s 2017 list of the 100 most popular girls names, while Oliver is at the top for boys for the seventh year running.

Kaiden is new on the boys list this year, coming in at 50, while Marley is the highest-ranked newcomer for girls at number 56.

Charlie, Riley and Billie/Billy made both lists, with Charlie the most popular of the unisex names, taking seventh place on the boys list and 37th on the girls.

  • It looks as though some names are coming back into popularity again. e.g. Charlotte was very popular back about 14 or 15 years ago. I don’t think James has ever become rare
