What to consider when buying a kids’ trampoline

From size and shape to safety features and add-ons, there are a few things to weigh up when considering which is the best trampoline for your family.

Safety first: Trampoline injuries are really common, around eight kids a day are injured by trampolines in Australia every day. And while there is a current Australian standard for trampolines, it’s only voluntary. Here are some important safety guidelines to follow:

• The main thing to remember when buying your kids their very first trampoline is that they are not recommended for children under the age of six.
• One of the best advances in trampoline safety has been the addition of safety padding over the frame and springs. And for ultimate safe jumping, ensure your trampoline has a safety net installed around the entire perimeter.
• Once you have the trampoline, the rule should be that only one child uses it at a time, and always while being supervised.
• And as tempting as it is to put a hose under the tramp on a hot day, the kids should never jump on it when the mat is wet.

Size of the trampoline: Trampolines come in a huge spread of sizes, from 2.5m x 2.5m up to 4m x 4m. When measuring up where your trampoline will go, make sure you look around for any hazards like tree branches or uneven ground.

Weight: All trampolines come with a weight limit, and if it’s just the kids jumping, a smaller limit will be fine. But if mum and dad are keen for a jump, well you’re going to need to hop on the scales and read the fine print!

Shape: The most common trampoline shape is round, but they also come in square and rectangles. A rectangle shape is perfect if you have less room or an awkward, narrow backyard. But you still need to make sure you have plenty of clearance around the trampoline.

Style: Generally there are two main styles of trampolines, springless and the classic spring mechanism version. Spring-free trampolines have rods or steel leaf springs to help give the mat bounce. And some use wide rubber bands instead of the traditional metal springs.

Age: As we’ve already mentioned, trampolines aren’t intended to be used for children under the age of six.

Size of the backyard: Even if you choose a compact trampoline, Raising Children recommends having at least 2.5m of clear area around the trampoline, that has a soft surface, like grass. It means if the kids do take a tumble, their landing won’t be on hard concrete. Also, make sure you set up the trampoline well away from fences and trees, and it can’t be placed over the top of something that isn’t flush with the ground. You also need ground that is flat and even, with a gradient no more than 3 degrees.

Accessories: There are a few different trampoline accessories available. Some make life a whole lot easier, and others are just for added fun. Certain trampolines have the accessories included and others are additional extras. They include things like a ladder (which is essential), basketball hoops, sprinklers, slides, tents and shade covers.
