It’s that time of year when ham becomes the hero of so many meals – and the nation’s best Christmas hams have just been crowned.

Australian pork producers recently competed in the Australian Meat Industry Council’s (AMIC) first Australian Charcuterie Excellence Awards which tips a hat to Australian-grown products for their quality and excellence.

Without further ado, here are the Christmas Ham category champions:

  • Maple Infused Leg Ham by Bargara Meats
  • Australian Semi-Boneless Signature Ham by Primo Foods, available at selected IGA Supermarkets nationally
  • Boneless Leg Ham by Andrew’s Choice, available in VIC, NSW, WA and NT

Australian Pork Limited CEO Margo Andrae says families on a budget this Christmas can still enjoy a high-quality festive ham.

“This Christmas even more hams are made using Australian pork at our butchers shops and supermarkets, making it affordable and accessible for all families, while supporting our local farmers and regional communities.”

How to choose the perfect Christmas ham

The majority of ham and bacon products that you see in your local supermarket are actually made using imported pork products, but it’s easy to find the Aussie products.

“Always check the labels on pack, or asking at your deli counter to make sure your ham is made from locally grown pork. And remember if it has a bone it’s one of our own!”

Here are Australian Pork’s top tips for choosing an Australian ham:

• Anything on the bone is guaranteed to be Australian pork, due to strict biosecurity laws prohibiting the importation of meat on a bone.
• When purchasing a boneless ham, a green and gold kangaroo only signifies that the product was made in Australia, and it can still contain imported pork.
• Australian Pork Limited encourages consumers to look closely at the bar chart under the green and gold kangaroo and check the number in the statements is over 90% Australian ingredients.
• A ham can have up to a 90-day life if sealed. And you can keep enjoying your Christmas ham for to three weeks if you use a ham bag and follow the instructions.

Happy hamming!

  • I love ham and so do my kids!
They love a good ham and cheese toastie.
There are always so many more varieties during chrissy which is great. It’s really the only time of the year I’ll buy one on a bone as I usually just buy the pre cut ones which are easy for sandwiches.
