Local Victorian surf coast pair Sally Cordner and Lucy Simms have joined forces to release their first children’s book, called I’m a Nipper Now, and we have 10 copies up for grabs!

The book is inspired by a real-life group of six friends, who embark on their first day of Nippers. Unsure, afraid and with many reservations the children witness a real lift surf rescue before their eyes – what an introduction to your first day at Nippers.

Alarmed by the water safety trends and with a history of community involvement in Surf Life Saving, Sally and Lucy realised there was a strong message to reach young children around participation in Surf Life Saving from a young age. Sally, the books author, has a keen interest in literature and with a career spanning primary school teaching and management roles, she has the perfect foundation to embark on the world of children’s books.

Lucy, Sally’s niece is an artist who’s works are typically inspired by the beach, sports, and people and it was therefore fitting for her to take on the illustrator’s role. They quickly became the perfect duo to take on this exciting new challenge together

The children’s book as been developed in partnership with an Australian independent publisher Boolarong Press and Surf Life Saving Australia. A donation will be made to Surf Life Saving Australia with every book purchase, as well as aiming to raise awareness of beach safety and boost interest in Nipper programs across Australia.

  • Semaphore Beach. Nostalgic, picnics on the beach, dinner at Aunty Elsie’s on the beach (yes, you were allowed to cook back then, lol)! Miles of beach to walk on, for spotting little crabs, climbing on the seaweed, seeing how long until we were stuck or swimming, memories of home, thanks!

  • Austinmer Beach (south of Sydney). Super family-friendly, with a couple of rock pools, it’s become our year-round happy place!

  • Fairhaven is the beach for us, we can get there with not much fuss, swimming, splashing or laying on the sand, sometimes even finding treasures washed up on the land. It’s our magic beach a place to call home. Where my little one will continue to Rome.

  • My favourite beach is St Kilda Beach because that is the first beach I went to with my husband together. We made unforgettable memories there and had so much fun there

  • A day trip to seven mile beach,
    Is in our budget’s reach.
So much space on the sand,
The kids are in play land!

  • Madora Bay Beach as it is a 2 minute walk away and is the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen

  • St Kilda beach is my favourite because there is always so much happening there and the beach is so lively with plenty of dogs playing on the sand and in the water

  • i am not a massive beach fan, but i would love to support local aussies in their new venture.

  • Brooms Head in Northern NSW. Unspoilt, quiet and a great place to relax with a picnic.

  • I am a teacher at a coastal school. My students would love this book so very much.

  • I love the beach at Merango ( near Apollo bay} as thats the beach we holidayed at, when we visited my grandparents, lots of great memories.

  • Why go to a fancy resort when you can experience the rustic charm of Rifle Butts Beach in Pt Victoria? It’s the perfect spot for anyone who loves the sound of firing waves and the sight of sandy targets. Who needs cocktails when you have seashells?

  • Agnes. Its just so beautiful and relatively quiet.

  • We love North Narrabeen beach. It’s a beautiful location and perfect with young kids where you can choose from the main beach, the calm lagoon, the ocean pool or rock pools. My kids love spending time there and also where my daughter does nippers!

  • My favourite beach is Forster Main Beach, I love the clear water, the marine life, the white sand, the cafes, the ocean pools and the locals! Our favourite place to visit.

  • We absolutely love Wanda Beach, its quieter, waves for days and…the spot where my husband proposed!

  • I have fond memories of Burleigh Beach on the Gold Coast, going there for family holidays growing up. We spent so much time building what I thought were huge sandcastles and watching in awe at the surfers. I now take my own kids there to experience the same thing.

  • Have to be Torquay it’s just gorgeous and blue and the scenery is just heaven. A nice day lying on the sand and having a dip in the ocean.

  • Sans souci beach, it’s quiet, clean and perfect for small kids as there is no waves

  • We have a similar book written by a paramedic and it’s so good to have books that help teach kids safety! Living on the coast water safety is so important… cant wait for our kids to start nippers!! We would love this book!
