Win one of 22 copies of The Slightly Alarming Tale of the Whispering Wars by Jaclyn Moriarty, thanks to Allen & Unwin.

An enchanting and whimsical spell-filled fantasy novel from Jaclyn Moriarty, the highly-acclaimed author of The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone and the award-winning author of Feeling Sorry for Celia and A Corner of White, suitable for readers who loved A Most Magical Girl.

I was taken by Whisperers at 2pm, so I never pulled the lever for the laundry chute.
That’s what bothered me most.
This is way ahead in the story, though. A lot happened before that.

The town of Spindrift is frequented by pirates, Shadow Mages and charlatans. It’s also home to the Orphanage School, where Finlay lives with Glim, Taya and Eli. Just outside town is the painfully posh Brathelthwaite Boarding School, home to Honey Bee, Hamish and Victor, Duke of Ainsley. When the two schools compete at the Spindrift Tournament, stakes are high, tensions are higher, and some people are out to win at any cost. Before long, the orphans and the boarding school are in an all-out war.

And then Whispering Wars break out, and Spindrift is thrust onto the front lines. Children are being stolen, Witches, Sirens and a deadly magical flu invade the town, and all attempts to fight back are met with defeat.

Finlay, Honey Bee and their friends must join forces to outwit the encroaching forces of darkness, rescue the stolen children, and turn the tide of the war. But how can one bickering troupe outwit the insidious power of the Whisperers? And who are the two mysterious figures watching them from the shadows?

From the award-winning Jaclyn Moriarty comes a spellbinding tale of unlikely friendship, unexpected magic and competitive athletics.

  • We love Harry Potter as the magic never ends.

  • Bobbi from the Hex Witch of Seldom

  • Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter. Not because he destroyed Riddle but because he stood by his friends, and never backed down when fighting evil. He suffered much, from abusive relatives, to the deaths of his most loved ones, and yet, he was always up for round two.

  • It would have to be Snape from the Harry Potter books because love was all he thought about – Always

  • Harry Potter.. who else.? So magical and entertaining..Great books,,

  • Newt Scamander, Magizoology, Order of Merlin, Second Class, I just love how entertaining, fearless, fun, nervous and shy this Potter character is.

  • I think that would have to be Harry Potter – he began my love of reading.

  • My favourite book character with magical abilities would be Dr Who. I love the fact that every Dr Who story is completely different and you never know what era he would end up in or the characters he would meet.

  • The marvellous and magical Matilda by Roald Dahl is our favourite character in a book.

  • HARRY POTTER. The wizard that the whole world knows about and aspires to be, protecting his friends and family from danger!

  • Dan Torrance from “Doctor Sleep”, because his psychic abilities allow him to give comfort to dying patients.

  • My favourite book character with magical powers is definitely Harry Power.

  • Harry potter of ourse there is no other magician he stole the worlds heart

  • Frozen every one wants to have magical powerx but yo have beauty and to find love is the whole picture.

  • Falcor the Luck Dragon from The Neverending Story. He was able to get Balthazar to believe in himself and trust his own heart – something we all strive to do

  • I’d have to say a classic character favourite is Mary Poppins, which mum wouldn’t love to have a magical nanny that teaches children kindness, wit & shows us life can be full of fun & beauty & has a bottomless bag of everything!

  • My favourite book character with magical powers is Honey Bee because she is great.

  • Who can go past Harry Potter? He has always been a favourite for me growing up and now my daughter also enjoys the Harry Potter collections too!

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,
Stirs up my magical powers desire.
Harry so wants to be a normal teen,
And this might seem a bit mean,
But I prefer my Harry as a wizard in training,
With mystical powers that he’s gaining.

  • Has to be Harry Potter, I’ve never read this book but would love to share the experience with my son who’s doing a great job with learning to read
