Hello!

I’m going thought 4-5 pairs of school shoes for my boy each school year. I’ve tried the big brands (adidas and nike and shoes & sox). I’ve tried the cheaper options (from kmart and big w) nothing last for him. He runs and plays a lot at school, that might be the wear and tear, but any suggestion what brands work well for an active boy?

  • Along with my comments below about getting fitted by a podiatrist that specialises in feet and appropriate shoes; we also found the Athletes Foot and Rebel Sport to be great for getting good shoes that go the distance. We did buy them when on special and that is a win for the family budget.

  • I am not sure whether your child’s school allows children to wear joggers or whether they must be black leather upper shoes. If they are allowed to wear joggers, I would suggest a brand like Decathlon which I have found to be longer wearing than other brands.

  • I think this is a boy thing. I never had any issues with shoes lasting for my daughter. She could get use out of them until she outgrew them. The best advice I can give is to not pay much for the shoes. Get decent second hand ones in the market place. There really is no brand that can stand up to the kind of shenanigans boys get into! I have found that the Aldi shoes I bought for my son have managed to last the first half of the year though, which I think may be a little longer than others!

  • I feel your pain! We went through two lots last year with my preppie son- that break time soccer did a number on his shoes and half the kids in the class shoes as well! We eventually found a good Asics shoe that had a somewhat reinforced front toe area on the outside of the shoe. The shoes seem very comfy, cost around $90 and its been well worth it this year so far- they are still perfect (including with the now break time footy kicking…never ends)!

  • I have resigned myself to just buying multiple pairs of shoes a year. A podiatrist told me that I might as well buy the cheaper brands – firstly they’re often just as good, and secondly they’ll wear out long before they can do his feet any damage! That was very reassuring.

  • You mentioned about NIKE. i bought Nike but for me it is a wonderful shoes. he is in preschool. maybe not that much playing. make be it depends on the variety of shoe? i bought a pair low graft running shoe. it works fine and no issues so far. i like them

  • I know you said you’ve tried Adidas but weve found that the Adidas shoes with the reinforced toes work well for us. We were going through pair after pair as well but these ones seem to last a lot longer than any of the others for us at least anyway. 🙂

  • Each child is different but have you considered buying a proper school shoe and then also having a pair of sneakers for sports days etc? Could be worth considering. Another option is my daughter is always running about everywhere and I have found this year sketchers have been fabulous and we are half way through the year and they are only just starting to look a little well loved. Perhaps seeing a foot specialist is worth considering as well.

  • Have you considered purchasing a brand that come with a warranty for the peace of mind?
Alpha brand has a few ranges of Boys school shoes that come with a 9 month warranty.
Clarke’s offer 12 months but I believe it is only on the sole of the shoes.
Colorado reiliance shoes offer a 12 month warranty.

  • We ended up going to a speciality store for a number of reasons related to feet. We were fitted by the podiatrist and then found shoes that suited our feet. The shoes are strong and sturdy and also go the distance. We found it was a good idea to get professional advice and act on the advice.

  • i think this can vary quite a bit between children and how active and what they do at school. for my child, we have used both nike and sketchers and found they have outlasted them to the point they have grown out and the shoes still look great. Williams has some great quality shoes and leather shoes if that is something you would consider.

  • We have found that Nike last the best for us, and have the best support. What part of the shoe is getting wrecked? If they are salvageable, you could try using some shoegoo to mend them and get a little extra life out of them before getting a new pair. You can get it in clear so it’s not as obvious. It works well, my husband skates and destroys rubber but this stuff helps repair them
