This new supermarket chain to land in Australia is expected to have shops five times bigger than Coles, more variety than Aldi and prices like Costco (with no membership). Tell us More!

The new chain of stores is called Kaufland. It’s well-known in central and eastern European countries like Poland and Bulgaria but this is the first time they are stepping into an English-speaking country.

So the BIG difference that sets Kaufland apart from its competitiors is space. These shops are massive – ranging up to 20,000 square metres. That’s up to 15 times bigger than an Aldi and five times bigger than a big Coles or Woolworths, as reported in the Herald Sun.

The chain also houses an extensive range – stocking up to 40,000 different items (in comparison Aldi only stocks 1,300). And just like Costco, it sells everything from ladders to kettles, TVs to Vodka.

Why Australia?

Kaufland, first opened in West Germany in the 1980s has really only expanded into former communist countries.

So it is not 100% clear why Kaufland has picked Australia as its next target of expansion. But what is apparent, is that the stores are imminent.

Jobs

There are jobs opportunities open right now on their Australian website. They are looking for property developers, administrative assistants, and architectural planners and would prefer if you spoke German.

The decision to open Kaufland in Australia comes after an extensive analysis at Schwarz Group, who own the supermarket chain. We speculate that they may feel there is room take over Australian shopping by offering a really big range.

If Kaufland is successful, this will surely put pressure on Coles, Woolworths, and even Aldi. We’ll just have to watch this space.

Do you think Australia has room for another big supermarket chain? Tell us in the comments below.

  • I’m with everyone else. If they support Australian growers and farmers I’ll use it. They sound big I wonder where they will try to put them?

  • I wonder where they will be opening. It would be great if they made use if existing infrastructure, like the now abandoned Master’s shopping sites.

  • If it source’s Australian products bring it on ..a bit of competition is always loved.

  • This is great news for job creation as there seems to be so many industries closing down and less work available. I hope they (like Aldi) stock a lot of Australian products

  • It will be great to have some more supermarket competition over here in Australia. Hopefully it will bring prices down.

  • I think if it will source most, if not all, of its products from within Australia…..I’ll love it. Aldi is the biggest supporter of Australia, Coles and Woolies are replacing brands with their own, which I don’t like.

  • It sounds great, the more variety the better!

  • We won’t get this in our area so won’t affect our family.

  • I would support it if it supported Australian growers and producers. Coles and Woolies don’t really do that, Aldi is pretty good at it. But it will be years before it hits Tas, we still don’t have an Aldi

  • Will they use local produce and support farmers?

    • I do have concerns about local produce and local farmers and suppliers not being used. I like to support locally produced and locally made products.

  • Maybe the staff at risk of losing their jobs at Coles should apply for jobs with the new supermarket chain. If hope the new supermarket does the right thing and stocks at least some Australian brands.

  • This is good for jobs!

And if I’m honest I just checked online to see if they are coming to my city because I speak german ????

  • More competition is a good thing but likely not with Australian produce – we really need to support Australian made here!!

  • And unfortunately, just like Aldi, they will probably never come to Tasmania 🙁

  • Personally, I’m not interested in BIG! I don’t need to spend hours shopping for groceries and then buying more of what I don’t need. I’m happy with my Coles. And I can choose to purchase Aussie products. I’m concerned about the internationals that bring in their own brands and therefore squeeze out our home grown brands.

  • What worries me is where the products come from and are they going to use Australian products or just import everything. If so then the only ones to benefit will be the workers and not Australia in general. Glad it means work for unemployed but believe profits will be sent overseas.

  • Good to know more jobs will be created.

  • I dont know if this is good or not being in a rural area I have very little access to most of these big shops I recently read that Cosco was the number 1 shop in Australia and being that there are only 3-4 Costco’s in Oz all in major cities that’s laughable .I would have to make a weekend away trip to visit one ,I love Ikea but there again an overnight stay to get to my nearest so unless anybody builds more than about 10 of these stores the chances of about 70% of us ever getting to see one is remote

  • How exciting competition makes prices cheaper so can’t wait to c this supermarket chain open in Australia

  • I’m expecting this to be near or in large cities but more competition should be good. Our supermarket prices are ridiculously high all over Australia, (although it may be due to high wages.)
