For many of us, bottle feeding is a battlefield. Thankfully, great products go a long way in making the journey easier, so to help you out, we’re taking a deep dive into glass baby bottles and why so many parents have given plastic the flick.

So, why glass? Well, for starters, it’s the OG bottle material, trusted by parents for generations. It’s naturally BPA-free, so you can stop panicking over microplastics leaching into plastic and let your mini guzzle happily. Plus, glass is tough stuff. It can handle dramatic changes in temperatures and hot sterilisation cycles like a champ.

And then there are aesthetics – whereas plastic bottles discolour and turn an icky shade of yellow after a while, glass is crystal clear. And it stays that way.

What’s so good about glass baby bottles?

  • They don’t stain or retain odours
  • Resistant to heat and thermal shock
  • Crystal clear and aesthetically beautiful
  • Durable and very long-lasting (great hand-me-downs!)
  • Safe for use in dishwashers, microwaves and sterilisers
  • By using borosilicate glass, they’re reusable and recyclable
  • They’re non-toxic and 100% free from chemicals that can leach into milk

But are all glass bottles created equal? Which are the best? Well, to point you towards a smart purchase, we’ve shortlisted the bottles other Aussie parents love right now. So grab your cuppa and get ready to find bub’s new bestie for milk time.

Are glass bottles better for baby?

Whether or not glass bottles are better for babies depends on your priorities as a parent. That said, glass bottles are widely loved by parents because they don’t leach nasty chemicals into precious milk, they’re easy to clean and they’re seriously tough.

Do you have to sterilise glass baby bottles?

Yes, you should sterilise glass bottles in your baby’s first year, just as you would plastic ones. According to Raising Children, feeding equipment should be sterilised up until 12 months of age to kill any germs that young immune systems aren’t ready to tackle.

  • I’m thinking of getting the Nuk ones!

    Reply

  • Glass does sound like an appealing choice. I’ll have to look into the chemical leaching, how much and what it’s effects are.

    Reply

  • I always used plastic bottles and never had a problem with them. I can just imagine a glass bottle accidently getting dropped and smashing. Personally I’m not a fan of them.

    Reply

  • I had glass bottles but never used them as I always breastfed but I like the idea of no chemicals…although they did seem quite heavy and I think once bub was holding the bottle themselves I’d be a bit wary of them.

    Reply

  • I wouldn’t use glass once baby is old enough to be handling the bottle themselves (as is often the case when a toddler is not quite weaned).

  • I’m not sure about glass. I used plastic and haven’t had any issues.

    Reply

  • Some great options out there.
With glass baby bottles, you don’t need to worry about chemicals leaching. They’re sturdy, but some might be a little heavy, especially if your baby is holding the bottle on their own. If they break, glass bottles can be dangerous. However, many come with silicone sleeves to prevent breaks and cracks

    Reply

  • So nice to see them returning to glass.

  • We always loved Philips Avent bottles.
