The Australian Healthy Food Guide has released a shocking image on popular breakfast cereals and the amount of sugar they contain, and these amounts are only PER CUP, so if you have a big bowl you’ll need to double or triple that sugar total!

I do worry about the amount of sugar that is in the kid’s food and I certainly don’t want my kids having a whole lot of sugar for breakfast.

We eat Weetbix or muesli on weekdays and usually toast and eggs on the weekend.

Here’s some great healthy MOMs breakfast recipes ideas:

  • I have only recently learnt of the effects of sugar and found out how much is in our food. Unfortunately my kids had more sugar then they should have, due to my ignorance

  • We don’t like sugar (regard it as poison) and have banned it from our cupboards. We only do cereal – Weetbix on Sunday. The rest of the week my kids eat toast with eggs/cheese/peanut butter, sweet potato waffles, banana pancakes, greek yoghurt with homemade granola (only sweetened with banana and cinnamon) and sometimes we have vegetable quiche / dish for breakfast

  • Unfortunately a lot of cereals have a high sugar level. Some also have a high sodium level and less fibre that you expect.
Some chocolate powders used to flavour milk have a lot more sugar than others.

  • We make our own muesli. We can control he amount of fruit and sugar that is in the muesli.

    • Everyone enjoys adding to the muesli jar too!

  • Breakfast is really important and usually I incorporate eggs in their meal.

  • OMG. Luckily we tend to eat weetbix with occasional forays into rice bubbles.

  • My daughter generally has one slice of mixed grains bread with jam. And then some chocolate milk.
Some products are indeed full of sugar. Better be aware of that.

  • I love the idea of making our kids more aware on nurtritional value. When I go shopping with my 6yr old, we look at products he wants and we talk about the sugar and fats etc. Apparently it is working cause when he went shopping with Poppy, he told poppy not to get a certain cereal cause “its got to much sugar and will hurt me” #winning
