US-based BabyCenter website reports Instagram-inspired names are on the rise!

Lux is up 75 per cent in its list of most popular names for boys, while Ludwig is up 42 per cent, Amaro 26 per cent, Reyes up ten per cent, Hudson up four per cent and Kelvin up three per cent.

Why YES they are all names of Instagram filters.

For the girls, Juno leaped 30 percent in popularity. (The Juno filter, introduced in 2015, makes outdoor photos especially gorgeous.) Valencia, which gives pictures a soft, warm glow, rose 26 percent on our girls’ name list. Willow gained 13 percent.”

“This is the first time we’ve seen technology break through as a source of name inspiration,” Linda Murray, BabyCenter’s editor-in-chief, said in a release.

“Photo-sharing is a daily and emotional part of millennials’ lives, and those two ingredients can trigger love for a name.”

“But there’s this beautiful thing that happens with an Instagram filter. You take these precious moments in your life and it makes them even more beautiful, it enhances them. I think people just have really warm feelings about that and these names come into their consciousness.”

I guess we have to get inspiration from somewhere. Right?

  • Lux? Really? I just read someone named their child “Zibadee”….and immediately started singing Zibadee Doo Dah….wasn’t he a character on the Magic Roundabout?
Maybe I’m a little old fashioned with my kids being Jessica and Kate :)
I’m not on Instagram as I don’t really want to see photos of what everyone is eating all the time!!!

  • yeah the names must get sub-conciously planted in their brains. when i was preggers, i had crazy combos that were inspired by music for example Jagger but luckily hubby was sensible

  • Mmm, I prefer to take my inspiration from elsewhere. I love Willow, but not based on an Instagram filter.

  • Amaro? Do you like that name? It means “bitter”. I find it quite weird! :-)

  • Child – ‘Mummy, why did you call me Sierra’?
Mum – ‘It was my favourite hue on Instagram’
